President Joe Biden arrived at the Delaware Air National Guard near New Castle on Friday afternoon ahead of a weekend of meetings with world leaders in the Wilmington area.

The president is hosting leaders from India, Japan and Australia at his Greenville home and at Archmere Academy in Claymont, his alma mater. This is the first time Biden has invited world leaders to the First State since he took the presidential office in 2020.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will join Biden, making up the “Quad.” They did not arrive with the president.

The “Quad” leaders are “committed to supporting the region’s development, stability, and prosperity to benefit the people of the Indo-Pacific,” according to a White House fact sheet from 2023.

Some of the topics discussed at the summit will be health security, natural disaster response, maritime security, high-quality infrastructure, critical and emerging technology, climate and clean energy, and cybersecurity, according to the White House.

This is the group’s fourth in-person meeting. Last year, Biden and the rest of the “Quad” met in Hiroshima, Japan, and the next in-person meeting will be held in India.

The president graduated from Archmere Academy in 1961, where he played football.

“President Biden asked that the historic Patio on the campus of his high school alma mater, Archmere Academy, be the site of the Quad Leaders’ Summit, with leaders from Australia, India, and Japan,” a school spokesperson said in a statement to Delaware Online/The News Journal on Sep. 19. “We welcome the President, our esteemed alumnus, and honorable dignitaries.”
