With kickoff less than two hours away, Mike Norvell and Florida State football reached the end of the Legacy Walk.
California football coach Justin Wilcox provided an update on guard Sioape Vatikani, who suffered a scary injury during Florida State’s 14-9 win Saturday night.
Vatikani was carted off the field late in the third quarter after taking two hits in rapid succession to the head or neck area. The offensive lineman fell to the ground and did not move immediately afterward, and the game stopped for about 10 minutes as EMTs treated him.
After the game, Wilcox told reporters Vatikani had been taken to a nearby hospital in Tallahassee. The player had movement in his extremities, Wilcox said.
Sioape Vatikani injury update
Cal guard Sioape Vatikani went down with 1:43 to go in the third quarter with FSU leading 7-6. Nyziah Hunter caught a five-yard pass from quarterback Fernando Mendoza on the play.
After medical personnel treated him on the field, Vatikani was placed on a cart and taken off the field. Vatikani was moving his limbs and gave a thumbs up. Players from both teams came to wish him well.
On the next play, Cal took a 9-7 lead on a 51-yard field goal by Ryan Coe.
After the game, Cal coach Justin Wilcox said Vatikani had movement in his extremities.
Sioape Vatikani stats
Before this season, Sioape Vatikani had played 24 of 25 possible games since coming to Berkeley in 2022. He had started 20 games for Cal. Running back Jaydn Ott ran for 1,315 yards last season with Vatikani as a key member of the offensive line.
This was Vatikani’s first game of the season after suffering an injury in spring camp.
