Dan Campbell moves out of Bloomfield Township home built in 2013

This Bloomfield Township home was originally built by a Detroit Red Wings player. Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell moved out of the house for his privacy and safety.

The Detroit Lions are coming back to Michigan on Sunday night with a 2-1 record after taking down the Arizona Cardinals, 20-13, in the first road trip of 2024.

The Lions held off the Cardinals (1-2) in Week 3 of the NFL season with a strong defensive performance in the second half after building a 20-10 lead by halftime. The offense’s early work was enough as the defense held Arizona’s offense to just a field goal in the final 30 minutes.

But the win came at a slight cost. Lions linebacker Derrick Barnes was ruled out with a knee injury suffered on the second drive after being carted off the field. Defensive tackle Alim McNeill was also downgraded to out with a shoulder injury suffered on the final drive of the first half. Rookie cornerback Terrion Arnold briefly left with a knee issue before returning in the second quarter.

With just over five minutes left, Brian Branch joined the injured list with a neck injury after a scary collision with Trey McBride. The defense was already without linebacker Alex Anzalone, who was ruled out pregame with a concussion.

On offense, tight end Sam LaPorta was in and out of the game dealing while with an ankle issue.

The Lions extended their streak of not losing consecutive games since October 2022.

LIONS INSIDER: In gritty and perhaps even ugly win vs. Cardinals, Lions rediscover themselves

Check out the game recap from Lions-Cardinals below.

The lead is down to one possession after the Cardinals got a defensive stop and drove 65 yards to the Lions’ 28-yard line before being stopped. Aidan Hutchinson recorded the Lions’ first sack on second down to put the offense behind the sticks. Prater hit the 45-yarder to put the pressure back on the Lions’ offense to run out the clock.

The Cardinals kept the offense on the field on fourth-and-7 from its own 48 needing two scores to cut the Lions’ deficit, but Detroit’s defense came up with another stop.

This time, the Lions brought pressure that did not get home, but Kerby Joseph got across the face of his receiver and knocked down Murray’s pass for an incompletion for his second turnover forced.

The defenses are dominating this third quarter as the Lions were stopped short on fourth-and-1 from the Cardinals’ 34-yard line.

The Lions immediately drove the ball into Arizona territory with two chunk plays but came across a fourth down similar to what the Cardinals faced on the other end of the field. The Lions snapped the ball quickly out of an offset I-formation and handed off to David Montgomery at fullback, but Arizona’s defense was ready and exploded through the right side of the line for a tackle for loss.

The interception didn’t come back to bite the Lions thanks to a great stop from the defense on fourth down. The Cardinals ran it three straight times for nine yards to set up a fourth-and-1 from the Lions’ 24. Offensive coordinator Drew Petzing drew up a naked bootleg with Murray, who got to the edge, but Carlton Davis wrangled him down an inch short of the marker. The referees initially ruled it a first down, but Dan Campbell challenged the call to get it overturned.

The Lions’ clean day on offense has come to an end.

A zone blitz fooled Goff and he tried to fit a pass to Brock Wright over the middle, but linebacker Dennis Gardeck was sitting directly in the flight of the pass and came down with an easy interception. Arizona returned it to the Detroit 33 with a chance to cut into the lead.

The Cardinals took a shot to the end zone coming out of the locker room, but Detroit’s playmaker in the back came away with the ball.

Safety Kerby Joseph cut in front of a deep shot intended for Marvin Harrison Jr. and high-pointed the ball for the takeaway in the end zone. Cornerback Terrion Arnold was in coverage and laid a big hit while Joseph secured the ball.

Old friend Matt Prater cut the lead to 10 points with a 42-yard field goal just before halftime. Arizona drove 42 yards in six plays and under 20 seconds to get into field goal range.

Ben Johnson still has his fastball.

The Lions’ offensive coordinator dialed up a perfect trick play to find the end zone just before the half to give the Lions a two-touchdown lead. On a second-and-1 from the Arizona 21-yard line, Jared Goff found Amon-Ra St. Brown on a short crossing route and he flipped the ball to Jahmyr Gibbs, who was streaking underneath him, on a hook-and-ladder. The pitch caught the Cardinals off-guard and he walked into the end zone.

The drive nearly ended up in disaster, however. On third down backed up in their own territory, the Lions tried to get a snap off. The play was blown dead as the clock hit two minutes, but the players did not hear it and Goff threw a tipped pass that was intercepted and returned for a touchdown.

The Lions are a perfect two-for-two on finding the end zone after last week’s frustrating red zone experience. On third-and-goal, Goff found Amon-Ra St. Brown on an underneath hinge route right at the goal line to re-take the lead. St. Brown then hit the ground and bear-crawled around in celebration. Jake Bates missed the extra point for his first official miss in the NFL.

The Lions ran the ball down the Cardinals’ throat again to put together the 13-play, 70-yard scoring drive. Jahmyr Gibbs was the featured back on the second possession and carried it nine times for 34 yards, including a pair of key first down conversions. Goff was perfect again, completing all four passes for 41 yards.

The Cardinals came right back down the field with an impressive opening drive of their own, capped off with a touchdown pass to their first-round rookie. Harrison beat Carlton Davis and Brian Branch on a long crossing route for a 10-yard touchdown. Arizona went 70 yards in eight plays and only faced one third down. Kyler Murray was 4-of-4 for 38 yards and also ran it twice for another 34 yards to negate a holding penalty.

The Lions’ offense seems to have shaken the cobwebs off from the first two weeks.

Detroit received the opening kickoff, marched right down the field and punched in a 1-yard Montgomery touchdown for the early lead. The Lions ran it six times, all Montgomery, on the drive for 39 yards, including 17 yards on the first two plays to set the tone. Jared Goff completed all three of his attempts to tight ends, one to Sam LaPorta and two to Brock Wright, for 31 yards.

Lions vs. Cardinals pregame notes

Last week, the Lions outgained the Buccaneers by nearly 250 yards, but only scored one touchdown on seven red zone trips and lost the turnover battle.

The red zone offense was a point of emphasis in practice this week, along with trying to slow down Murray and a Cardinals offense averaging 34.5 points through two games. Murray has been one of the best quarterbacks across the league in the first two games and has a strong cast of skill players around him in Marvin Harrison Jr., Trey McBride and James Conner. On offense, the Lions will try to get the running game going after opting to throw twice as many passes as runs in Week 2.

The main injury concern for Detroit linebacker and captain Alex Anzalone, who is out after leaving early last week and entering the concussion protocol. The Lions feel confident in the defense, which ranks top 10 through two games, even if Anzalone can’t go thanks to the emergence of a strong defensive line led by Aidan Hutchinson and options in the back seven.

Lions vs. Cardinals prediction, picks

Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press: The NFL is such a fickle league. Both the Lions and Cardinals are 1-1 to start the year with wins over the Rams, but Arizona’s start has raised hopes in the desert while the Lions’ has some people on edge in Detroit. The Lions haven’t looked great in their first two games. Their offense has sputtered and Goff’s turnovers have been an issue. But their defense has played like a top-10 unit and their roster’s too talented to stay down for long.

The Cardinals won’t be a pushover. They’re well-coached, they play hard and Murray is electric with the ball in his hands. But the Lions are the better, more physical team. I think they win the turnover battle, control the trenches and come away with a win. The pick: Lions 31, Cardinals 21.

The Lions only had two players, defensive backs Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and Ifeatu Melifonwu, ruled out before making the trip to Arizona, while Anzalone (brain) was ruled out pregame. Terrion Arnold (illness), Graham Glasgow (shoulder) and Isaiah Williams (abdomen) were listed as but are available to play.

The Cardinals will be without right tackle Kelvin Beachum, the backup right tackle playing in place of Jonah Williams, who was placed on injured reserve after Week 1. Jackson Barton or Charlie Heck, two practice squad call-ups, are some options for Arizona to try blocking Hutchinson.
