Hundreds race for a cure for gynecologic cancer at USA’s Go Run

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – Saturday was a beautiful morning to go for a run, and hundreds of people gathered at the University of South Alabama to do just that.

Even a few members of FOX10 team put on their running shoes to compete.

“Over 600 runners showed up to run the USA GO Run this morning. And GO stands for Gynecological Oncology—this run actually benefits cancer research at the USA Health Mitchell Cancer Institute.”

This was the 17th time the race has taken place. The event kicked off with a 5K run at 8 a.m., and a one-mile fun run followed an hour later. One runner says this is a special race for a great cause, and he tells FOX10 he traveled from far away to be here.

“It’s a pleasure to come all the way here from California and run this amazing course. I’ll definitely be back here next year,” said Steven Shadell.

The event wasn’t over when you crossed the finish line. There were a variety of sponsor booths set up and even a fun play area for the kids- complete with inflatables.

One of the event’s major sponsors, Nicolas Catranis, says he’s grateful to be at the run to watch his son compete.

“At this age…nothing better,” said Catranis.

Runners, supporters, sponsors and cancer survivors packed out USA’s campus. Darlene Webster, a gynecologic cancer survivor, was at one of the sponsor booths with Sisterhood of Survivors. She tells FOX10 why the money raised from this run is essential for moving toward a cure.

“It’s a silent killer, and without the research, we will never find a cure,” said Webster.

A nurse with Mobile OBGYN and Women’s Health says it is her personal mission to support those battling gynecologic cancer.

“You see these women come in with their struggles and you want to support them anyway you can. And if it’s running to raise money and awareness that’s what you do,” she said.

Kathy Tinneae with Sisterhood of Survivors adds that she’s thankful for the ongoing support and awareness the Go Run creates.

“It’s not only awareness but it’s support after their cancer treatment that’s really helpful,” she stated.

Organizers say over the past 16 years, the Go Run has raised more than $800,000 in support of gynecologic cancer research, clinical trials and outreach at the Mitchell Cancer Institute. This year, their goal was to top the one-million dollar mark.

If you didn’t get a chance to come out and run, don’t worry—there are still other ways for you to donate.
