Here’s your 2024 Wisconsin Badgers schedule and scores

Here’s your 2024 Wisconsin Badgers schedule and scores. Homecoming is Saturday, October 26, against Penn State. The Badgers close out on November 29, against Minnesota.

After an uneven performance in its season opener that left fans uneasy, the Wisconsin Badgers football team came out firing with several explosive plays in its 27-13 Week 2 win over South Dakota on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium.

The margin of victory was the same as Week 1, though, and South Dakota, which is one of the best teams in the Football Championship Subdivision, didn’t go away easily and stayed within striking distance throughout, giving the Badgers another test.

However, Wisconsin took over in the end.

The Badgers’ defense got better late and Cade Yacamelli enjoyed a breakout game for a deep running back unit that was playing without Tawee Walker. Tyler Van Dyke was also much better in his second game at quarterback for the Badgers, showing his ability to stretch the field.

The Badgers next welcome national powerhouse Alabama on Sept. 14.

The Journal Sentinel featured all the top plays and moments from the Wisconsin-South Dakota game. Review it below in reverse chronological order.

First downs: Wisconsin 23, South Dakota 13

Third down %: Wisconsin 7 of 14 (50%), South Dakota 2 of 11 (18%)

Total yards: Wisconsin 385, South Dakota 237

Passing yards: Wisconsin 214, South Dakota 114

Rushing yards: Wisconsin 171, South Dakota 123

Penalties: Wisconsin 4 for 19 yards, South Dakota 9 for 75 yards

Time of possession: Wisconsin 32:29, South Dakota 27:31

In his second start with the Badgers, the fifth-year senior completed 17 of 27 passes for 214 yards and had his first touchdown as a Badger.

The Wisconsin Badgers displayed their rushing depth against South Dakota. With Tawee Walker hurt, the Badgers leaned on Cade Yacamelli behind Chez Mellusi. He delivered.

Yacamelli led the Badgers with a college-high 73 yards on eight carries. Mellusi had a game-high 16 carries for 60 yards and two touchdowns. Darrion Dupree ended the game with six carries on the final drive for 24 yards.

Freshman Dilin Jones and junior Jackson Acker also saw action in the run game.

The Badgers march down the field and put this game away. Freshman Darrion Dupree also got to show what he can do on the drive. The Badgers’ running back depth really showed today.

They played without No. 2 tailback Tawee Walker, who was fantastic in the season opener (66 yards). But the Badgers proved they’re more than a one or two-man team.

Wisconsin went 13 plays for 55 yards to the South Dakota 7-yard line and were content on letting the time expire. The Badgers had the ball for the final 6:20. Overall, UW controlled time of possession in the fourth quarter, having the ball for 11 minutes, 35 seconds.

For the second straight week, it was a lot more difficult than it should have. But the Badgers prevailed, 27-13, to move to 2-0 for the first time since 2020.

No doubt they’ll have to play a lot better to have any chance against Alabama.

The Badgers defense gets another quick stop.

The big play came on third down. Linebacker Christian Alliegro sacked Aidan Bouman for a 9-yard loss. The Badgers’ defense has been very active.

South Dakota has totaled just 9 yards in its last four possessions. That’s great work by Wisconsin, especially after South Dakota was playing with a lot of confidence early in the second half.

The Badgers will turn to their running game to ice this game away with 6:20 left.

South Dakota has lost its composure. And Wisconsin is the beneficiary. Four penalties by its defense cost them 50 yards on the Badgers’ drive.

Teven McKelvey had the first two penalties for South Dakota. First, there was the horse collar and then there was a face mask. That’s 30 yards in penalties by McKelvey. The Badgers were on the move.

Then with the Badgers facing a 3rd and 3 at the South Dakota 29-yard line, Dennis Shorter was ejected for a targeting call. Now, each team has lost a player over targeting. Wisconsin was now at the Coyotes’ 14-yard line after beginning the drive at its own 15-yard line.

A delay of game penalty later put the Badgers at the 1-yard line. On 4th and goal, Chez Mellusi pounded it in for the score. That’s his second TD of the game.

That was Wisconsin football. It’s the Badgers’ first touchdown since the first quarter. The Badgers finally have control of this one.

Drive: 11 plays, 85 yards, 4:51 (1-yard touchdown)

Score: Wisconsin 27, South Dakota 13 (with 7:41 left in the fourth quarter)

The Badgers defense forces another punt.

After South Dakota scored a touchdown to open the second half, the Coyotes haven’t gotten much from their running game. The drive lasts just five plays and 12 yards.

The Badgers were looking for a long drive to get full control back of the game.

That didn’t happen. It lasted just three plays and 51 seconds. Wisconsin faced a 3rd and 1 at their own 39-yard but a 5-yard penalty pushed it back. That turned a likely run into a pass. And Tyler Van Dyke’s pass was incomplete after he had his throwing arm hit. The right side of the Badgers offensive line was beat on the play.

South Dakota does its job.

The Coyotes offense gets the ball back early in the fourth quarter.

Fans, players and even announcers love the Jump Around tradition at Camp Randall Stadium before the start of the fourth quarter.

Wisconsin’s defense forces a three and out.

That’s just what Mike Tressel’s unit needed. The Badgers get the ball back with 27 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Badgers’ drive stalled at the South Dakota 33-yard line. But Wisconsin still gets points out of the drive after Nathanial Vakos drilled a 50-yard field goal.

Wisconsin’s lead is back up to seven points at 20-13. A positive drive after South Dakota grabbed all the momentum.

Drive: 7 plays, 49 yards, 2:34 (50-yard field goal)

Score: Wisconsin 20, South Dakota 13 (with 2:21 left in the third quarter)

The Badgers offense has restored some order on this drive. To this point in the third quarter, they only had three plays. The muffed punt cost them a drive.

But Cade Yacamelli opens the drive with a 14-yard run to get the Badgers offense on track.

Tyler Van Dyke then found Will Pauling open across the middle for 21 yards to get the Badgers to the South Dakota 45-yard line. That’s now four passes for Van Dyke over 20 yards. He didn’t have any last week. He’s also spreading the ball around to his receivers.

And Yacamelli continues to run with authority and making the most of every touches today.

Wisconsin defensive lineman Elijah Hills gets a huge sack on third down. The Badgers defense gets a critical stand and only allows a 32-yard field goal.

South Dakota gets closer, though, and Wisconsin’s lead is down to 17-13. Still, that was a big stop by Hills and the Badgers defense.

Drive: 5 plays, -7 yards, 1:44 (32-yard field goal)

Score: Wisconsin 17, South Dakota 13 (with 5:06 left in the third quarter)

The Badgers have just lost one of their top linebackers after Jake Chaney was disqualified for targeting. He’ll also miss the first half of Wisconsin’s game against Alabama next week. That’s a huge blow.

South Dakota’s offense was in a rhythm and continued to have the Badgers’ defense on their heels.

After seven straight runs to open the second half, Aidan Bouman’s 18-yard pass to Carter Bell gets a first down to the Wisconsin 39-yard line.

The Coyotes were in business. But on 3rd and 8 at the 37-yard line, the Badgers defense swarm Travis Theis to force a punt.

But then the Badgers’ Vinny Anthony fumbled the punt within the 10-yard line. South Dakota now has the ball with a golden opportunity at 1st and goal at the Wisconsin 8-yard line.

Wow, this game has really turned.

The Badgers offense goes three and out for the first time.

Tyler Van Dyke was sacked on 3rd and 6 for a loss of 7 yards at their 24-yard line. The momentum is clearly on South Dakota’s side now.

Can the Badgers’ defense stop the surging Coyotes’ rushing attack?

This got a lot more interesting.

Keyondray Jones-Logan busted off a 35-yard run touchdown as he raced by a bunch of Wisconsin defenders on his way to the end zone.

After an early 14-0 lead, the Badgers now have a fight on their hands. Charles Pierre Jr. got the drive going with three straight runs of 5, 13 and 17 yards.

That set up Jones-Logan’s TD run on the next play. Four plays, four runs for South Dakota.

The Badgers’ defensive line needs to tighten things up. The FCS’ sixth-ranked team certainly isn’t going away.

Drive: 4 plays, 75 yards, 2:22 (35-yard touchdown run)

Score: Wisconsin 17, South Dakota 10 (with 12:38 left in third quarter)

Wisconsin has 9 first downs; South Dakota has 6Wisconsin is 4 of 7 on third downs; South Dakota is 2 of 6Wisconsin has 245 total yards; South Dakota has 124Wisconsin has 147 passing yards; South Dakota has 90Wisconsin has 98 rushing yards; South Dakota has 34Wisconsin has just one penalty for 5 yards; South Dakota has three penalties for 15 yards

Here are some team and player stats from the first half:

Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke 9 of 11 for 147 yards (13.4 yards per pass) and one touchdown. Six receivers have at least one catch.

Top receiving stats: C.J. Williams 1 reception for 50 yards, 1 touchdown, Vinny Anthony II two receptions for 41 yards, Bryson Green two receptions for 29 yards, Cade Yacamelli two receptions for 13 yards

Running back stats: Cade Yacamelli leads the running attack with 59 yards on seven carries (8.4 yards per run). Chez Mellusi has 38 yards on 10 carries (3.8 yards per run) with one touchdown.

The Badgers have a two-touchdown lead on South Dakota at halftime, 17-3.

They started fast with explosive plays by Tyler Van Dyke and the passing game and they also used their deep running game.

The Badgers followed up South Dakota’s long drive with one of their own.

And like the Coyote’s last drive, Wisconsin’s ends with a field goal.

The Badgers used a heavy dose of runs, primarily by Cade Yacamelli, to set up the 24-yard field goal by Nathanial Vakos.

Yacamelli set the tone on the drive with a 29-yard run on the first play to get the ball out to the 49-yard line. Yacamelli had another 3 yards, then it was Jackson Acker for 4 yards. On 3rd and 3, it was back to Yacamelli, the redshirt sophomore, who got the first down with a 4-yard run.

The Whitefish Bay graduate is really running with purpose today. Tyler Van Dyke then completed a pass to Bryson Green for 7 yards. After that it was Chez Mellusi’s turn for two carries. There’s no Tawee Walker today, but the Badgers are showing their depth at the running back position with Mellusi, Yacamelli and Acker.

Yacamelli also gets two catches of 6 and 7 yards to get the Badgers to the Coyotes 7-yard line. That set up the 24-yard field goal with 7 seconds left on the clock.

Drive: 13 plays, 68 yards, 6:56 (24-yard field goal)

Score: Wisconsin 17, South Dakota 3 (with 7 seconds left in second quarter)

South Dakota continued the positive momentum it had on its previous possession.

It ended with a field goal for its first points of the game.

The Coyotes used a long 11-play, 57-yard drive that featured a mix of big running and passing plays.

On the drive’s second play, Aidan Bouman connected with JJ Galbreath for 24 yards to the Wisconsin 38-yard line. Later, Travis Theis ran for 17 yards on a third down to get to the Wisconsin 11-yard line.

A 1-yard loss and then an incompletion set up a 3rd and 11 from the 12-yard line. The Coyotes get 4 yards on third down. That set up an easy chip shot.

Drive: 11 plays 57 yards, 5:48 (25-yard field goal)

Score: Wisconsin 14, South Dakota 3 (with 7:14 left in second quarter)

Chez Mellusi’s 5-yard loss set the Badgers back after a first down early in the second quarter.

The Badgers punt for a second time but they at least get some breathing room away from their own end zone.

That was the kind of first quarter that Luke Fickell, Phil Longo and the coaches drew up.

The Badgers take a 14-0 lead into the second quarter. Explosive plays were the theme of the first 15 minutes. The Badgers already have passing plays of 50 yards, 32 yards and 22 yards. Van Dyke was 4 of 6 for 113 yards and a touchdown.

Wisconsin is also getting positive runs from Chez Mellusi (26 yards) and Cade Yacamelli (19 yards).

South Dakota gets into Wisconsin territory for the first time after a couple first downs. But the Badgers defense stands tall and forces a punt.

The punt was a beauty as it’s down to the 5-yard line with 42 seconds left.

The Wisconsin Badgers are showing off all of their offensive weapons.

After two runs by Chez Mellusi to set up a 3rd and 2 from the 50-yard line, quarterback Tyler Van Dyke executed a beautiful run-pass-option and found a wide open C.J. Williams down field. Williams was untouched as he raced into the end zone for his first career touchdown.

It was also Van Dyke’s first passing touchdown with the Badgers. The fifth-year senior transferred from Miami in the offseason.

The Badgers didn’t put up any points in the first quarter against Western Michigan last week. They changed that with two touchdowns in their first three possessions. Whereas Wisconsin had long and methodical drives in the Week 1 game, they’re hunting for quick scores today.

Drive: 3 plays, 58 yards, 1:23, 50-yard touchdown pass

Score: Wisconsin 14, South Dakota 0 (with 4:48 left in the first quarter)

One thing is clear in this game: The Badgers are letting it loose.

On Wisconsin’s second possession Van Dyke went deep on a flea flicker. The throw was incomplete but the tone is set.

With backup running back Tawee Walker apparently out today, Cade Yacamelli got all the runs on this drive. He had three runs that totaled 17 yards, including an 11-yard first down run.

The Badgers look like they have more energy in this game than last week and offensive flow.

South Dakota gets one big play on their opening drive – Aidan Bouman completed a 25-yard pass to Travis Theis – but then the drive stalled.

The Badgers offense will look for more explosive plays early in this one.

The Wisconsin Badgers strike first with an impressive opening scoring drive to take a 7-0 lead. Chez Mellusi capped it off with a 9-yard TD run standing up.

The Badgers actually started it with a fumble by Chez Mellusi but he quickly recovered it. After that brief scare, Tyler Van Dyke fired away.

On second and 2, Van Dyke rolled out to his right and delivered a perfect pass on the run to Vinny Anthony for 32 yards along the sideline. It was the longest play of the season.

Two plays later and facing 3rd and 7 from the South Dakota 32-yard line, Van Dyke connected with Bryson Green for 22 yards on a cross route. After a 1-yard run by Mellusi, the senior then ran it in from 9 yards for the game’s first score.

Drive: 7 plays, 75 yards, 2:46, 9-yard touchdown run

Score: Wisconsin 7, South Dakota 0

It’s a cool 62 degrees with an 8-mph wind.

The Badgers’ All-American cornerback is game-day ready.

Northwestern opened the week on Friday with a loss to Duke. And in a battle of top 10 teams on Saturday, the reigning national champion Michigan Wolverines are getting blown out at home by Texas. It’s not a shocker that they’re necessary losing but score qualifies as a stunner. Texas entered the fourth quarter with a 31-6 lead. Michigan hasn’t lost since the 2022 season.
