South Carolina QB out vs Akron

COLUMBIA — South Carolina football quarterback LaNorris Sellers will not play on Saturday vs Akron (7:30 p.m. ET, ESPNU) according to a report made by college football reporter Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports and 247Sports on Friday night.

Sellers injured an ankle right before halftime against LSU last week and played in only one drive in the second half of the game for the Gamecocks (2-1) before backup Robby Ashford took over. Ashford will reportedly start Saturday night vs the Zips (1-2).

Sellers assured South Carolina coach Shane Beamer earlier this week that he would be good to go for the game and Beamer repeated that to media during his weekly availability on Tuesday.

On his “Carolina Calls” radio show Thursday evening, Beamer said Sellers had been progressing nicely throughout practice, getting “better each day.”

With Ashford starting, Davis Beville and Luke Doty are in the mix for the new backup option, according to Beamer. Doty has played quarterback for South Carolina before. Beville, a graduate of Greenville High, played three seasons at Pittsburgh before playing the last two years at Oklahoma. He’s played in 16 college games total.

LaNorris Sellers stats

Through three games, Sellers has completed 29 of 53 passes for 393 yards with two touchdowns. He has rushed 145 yards on 40 carries, with three rushing touchdowns. He’s been sacked 10 times and has thrown two interceptions.

In 2023, Sellers carried the ball five times for 51 yards and scored one rushing touchdown. He was 4-of-4 passing his freshman season, throwing two touchdowns.

Robby Ashford stats

Ashford, a redshirt senior, played in the second quarter against Kentucky when Sellers left the game with a hip injury. In three quarters of play this season, Ashford is 3-of-5 passing for 49 yards. He has 37 rushing yards on 17 carries.

At Auburn last season, Ashford completed 14 of 27 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed 217 yards on 46 carries, with five rushing touchdowns.

Ashford’s best season so far was his first with the Tigers. In 2022, he was 123-of-250 for 1,613 passing yards and threw seven touchdowns. He added 710 rushing yards on 153 carries, with seven more rushing touchdowns.
