How much did North Carolina pay JMU football? What Tar Heels owe Dukes for record-breaking upset

North Carolina football did not get its money’s worth from its pay game against James Madison.

The Tar Heels, who entered the game undefeated, surrendered a school-record 53 points in the first half on Saturday from Kenan Memorial Stadium in Chapel Hill. The Dukes ended with 70 points against a UNC defense that had no answers all game through the air or on the ground in a 70-50 loss. JMU posted 609 total yards, including 388 passing and 221 rushing, before the final possession when it kneeled the ball out to end the game.

Tight end Kyle Logan scored on an 11-yard grab from quarterback Alonza Barnett III with 4:26 remaining in the game to tie the UNC school record for most points allowed. According to the broadcast, it was the most points scored in the stadium, which started hosting games in 1927.

The most points UNC has ever allowed in a game occurred a decade ago, on Sept. 13, 2014, when the Tar Heels lost 70-41 to East Carolina.

Perhaps the worst part of Saturday’s performance for the Tar Heels? UNC paid the Dukes six figures for the embarrassment. Here’s what you need to know about UNC’s payout to JMU:

How much did UNC football pay James Madison?

While the loss will sting, the amount of money the Tar Heels paid to play the Dukes will be even worse. For a chance to break a UNC record on the road, JMU received a payout of $500,000 to embarrass UNC on its home field, per a contract obtained by the USA TODAY Network.

Per the contract, the agreement was made effective with a second amendment on Aug. 5, 2020, after the schools initially agreed to the game on May 7, 2018. The second amendment moved the game from Nov. 22, 2025, to Sept. 21.

The Dukes had 25 points in the first quarter, including a score on a blocked punt return by Jayden Mines. They added 28 points in the second quarter and reached 60 with a score to start the second half. Terrence Spencer added a 33-yard interception return before the end of the half to make it 53-21 at the break. The most points the Tar Heels had allowed in a half before Saturday was 45.

Barnett III finished 22-of-34 passing for 388 yards and five passing touchdowns. He also added 13 rushes for 99 yards and two scores. The seven total touchdowns were a school record. George Pettaway added 16 rushes for 87 yards, while Cam Ross had seven receptions for 107 yards and a TD. Omarion Dollison added three catches for 125 yards and a score.
