According to predictions from Accuweather, foliage in New Hampshire is expected to peak in early-mid October, making that the best month to visit the state for fall.
Adventure-seekers can explore the foliage in the Mountains by hiking through Franconia Notch State Park to the Flume Gorge, exploring caves and waterfalls at the Lost River Gorge & Boulder Caves or even climbing up Mt. Washington, the highest peak of not only the White Mountains region, but the entire Northeast.
If you’re looking to relax and just take in the view, the White Mountains region also has many scenic roads perfect for a peaceful drive-by. Hop on a train for a ride through the Conway Scenic Railroad or the Granite State Scenic Railway, or try driving on the Kancamagus Highway, recognized as a National Scenic Byway by the United States Department of Transportation.
Non-hikers can experience the beauty of Mt. Washington through a ride on the Mount Washington Cog Railway, the world’s first mountain-climbing cog train, or a drive on the Mt. Washington Auto Road, which awards your car a bumper sticker if completed yourself.
