As much as things change, they stay the same. The Nebraska Cornhuskers suffered another one-score loss, this time at the hands of the Illinois Fighting Illini, 31-24 in overtime.

The Huskers played their first overtime game since last season when they lost at Wisconsin 24-17. With the loss, Nebraska fell to 8-9 all-time in overtime games and 2-2 at Memorial Stadium. They’ve also lost eight consecutive overtime games dating back to a 37-34 win at Iowa in 2014.

Freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola finished the game 24-of-35 passing for 297 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Jahmal Banks had eight receptions for 94 yards, while Isaiah Neyor grabbed four passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns. The Husker run game struggled mightily all night, with Dante Dowdell having 20 carries for only 72 yards.

Luke Altmyer led the Illinois offense, going 21-of-27 for 215 yards and four touchdowns. The Illini ran for 166 yards against The Blackshirts for 4.3 yards per carry.

With the loss, the Cornhuskers fall to 3-1 on the season and will now take to the road to face the Purdue Boilermakers. Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m. CT and will be broadcast on Peacock.

Overtime woes

Nebraska has not scored in seven consecutive overtime games, dating to a 2014 win at Iowa.

A familiar feelingYou don’t say

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule: “The moment showed up and we didn’t make the plays you need to make to win the game.”

— Sam McKewon (@swmckewonOWH) September 21, 2024

WRONG!In fairness…3-18 in one-score game

Nebraska is 3-18 in one-score games since the start of 2021.

The Huskers’ last five losses are all by one score.

Is Scott Frost at the game?

Someone see if Scott Frost is in the stadium. It looks like Nebraska is gonna lose another one score game because of an untimely fuck up

The moment

The moment you prepare for for months. And nothing changes. Ever.

— Jack Mitchell (@JackMitchellLNK) September 21, 2024

Refs sucked

Refs sucked.

But the assumption Nebraska has a Top 10 D has turned out to be false.

Some questionable timeouts and challenges.

Bad ending.

Go Big Red.

— Huskers Gameday (@HuskersGameday) September 21, 2024

That kind of nightIs that bad?

Don’t let this loss to Illinois distract you from the fact that Nebraska is now 0-27 vs ranked opponents since 2016

Learn and move onToo many mistakes

Brett Bielema is a damn good coach…Outstanding win for @IlliniFootball…Illinois had a great plan all night on both sides of the ball and Luke Altmyer was terrific@HuskerFootball made far too many mistakes…Handling success takes maturity

— Joel Klatt (@joelklatt) September 21, 2024

Best thing for us???

This is going to be the best thing to happen to for us

We needed that

— Will Compton (@_willcompton) September 21, 2024

Very funnyI get that referenceThanks… I guess

I truly feel horrible for Nebraska fans.

Legitimately NO ONE has it worse than them.

They show up, sell out every game…

They lose… but it’s the WAY they lose… they lose every game by ONE POSSESSION.
