Senator Lindsey Graham discusses winner-take-all change in Nebraska with local lawmakers

Kearney, Neb. — Republican lawmakers continue a push to make Nebraska winner take all before the upcoming general election.

“Quite a few people have voiced opinion either by phone or email, we’re hearing from a lot,” said State Senator Raymond Aguilar. “Republicans are leaning one way, [Democrats are] leaning the other way, It’s going to be a battle.”

Senator Aguilar was one of several dozen people invited to meet with South Carolina U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham on Wednesday in what was described as “kind of a last minute deal” regarding winner take all.

“I think Nebraska should speak with a united voice and that’s what we would accomplish,” said Aguilar.

In the current split vote system, Omaha has been called a blue dot in the otherwise red leaning state, which leads some to see Nebraska as key to a potential Harris path to the White house.

“I hope they will allow winner take all… I hope the people in Nebraska will understand this may come down to a single electoral vote,” saidSenatorGraham.

3rd District Representative Adrian Smith was joined by Nebraska’s other congressional delegation in signing an endorsement for winner take all, with 1st District representative Mike Flood joining the meeting with Senator graham on Wednesday. In two of the last four presidential elections, district 2 has voted for the Democratic ticket. Smith spoke with NTV’s Sara Kirkley regarding the endorsement for winner take all.

Sara: “Do you think you would sign a similar letter if district 2 was likely to vote Republican?

Smith: “Again, this is about doing what Nebraskans want us to do ultimately, and I think strengthening Nebraska’s say, I think it would strengthen our say with a winner take all system”

State Democrats have voiced opposition to the push in the past, and according to Aguilar there doesn’t seem to be enough support at the moment for the governor to hold a special session. Pillen has stated that he will only hold the session if he has the necessary 33 votes to avoid a filibuster.

Lawmakers would likely have to pass winner take all before early voting in the state begins on October 7th.
