Both teams have had sizeable wins against lesser opponents this season, but struggled in credible matchups.
Minnesota started off the year with a tough 19-17 loss at home against North Carolina in Week 1. They have responded with back-to-back shutouts over Rhode Island and Nevada, putting up 75 points in the process. However, the big question is whether PJ Fleck’s team can produce against a solid opponent, especially when their opponent has a historically respected defense in Iowa. Minnesota is at home, where they have won three of their last four games.
Iowa is trying to figure out what they are. Despite coming into the 2024 campaign ranked in the top 25, they have shown why many doubt them. A disappointing 20-19 loss, at home, to Iowa State in Week 2 highlighted the ongoing offensive struggles the Hawkeyes have experienced over the years. While they scored 38 points against Troy last Saturday, they surprisingly gave up 21 points. If Iowa wants any chance of hanging with the best in the revamped Big Ten, they need to figure out the problems on both sides of the ball.
Saturday night marks the 98th meeting between the Hawkeyes and the Gophers. Minnesota is 63-52-2 against Iowa, snapping an eight-game losing streak to the Hawkeyes last season.
