The Volunteers (3-0) roll into this SEC matchup with the nation’s top scoring offense at 63.7 points per game and the second-highest scoring offense (639.3). They also have boasted the largest scoring margin (Plus-178) in the first three games in SEC history and the largest scoring margin since 2013.
Those wins have come against Chattanooga, NC State and Kent State. The cupcake schedule is caving way to a seismic showdown against an SEC newcomer looking to make a statement.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava has put together a strong start with a 70% completion percentage while throwing for 698 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. he also has 102 rushing yards with one score.
Depth is no issue at receiver as 11 Volunteers have at least three receptions. Senior Donte Thornton Jr. leads the way with five receptions for 169 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore Chris Brazzell II has 10 receptions for 140 yards and one touchdown.
Junior running back Dylan Sampson has put together an early Heisman campaign with 45 carries for 357 yards and is tied for the most touchdowns in the country with nine. He averages 7.9 yards per carry.
Freshman running back DeSean Bishop isn’t too shabby either, tallying 22 carries for 222 yards and three touchdowns. He touts a team-high 10.1 yards per carry.
The Vols defense will likely get overlooked here because of their high-powered offense. They are allowing the second-least yards per game (160.7) in the nation. Dating back to last year’s Cheez-It Citrus Bowl against Iowa, Tennessee has not allowed an offensive touchdown in the past 16 quarters.
Tennessee has suffered five of its six losses on the road over the past two seasons. This is a true test for Iamaleava, and for the program as a whole.
In a game saturated with storylines, head coach Josh Heupel returns home to his alma mater where he led the Sooners to a BCS national championship. He spent 11 years on the Oklahoma coaching staff before the program went in a different direction under Bob Stoops.

The Sooners (3-0) have looked shaky with victories over Houston and Tulane, especially on the offensive line, where they have struggled to protect sophomore quarterback Jackon Arnold
The signal caller has notched 472 yards with seven touchdowns and two interceptions. He is completing 63% of his passes and leads the Sooners rushing attack with 53 yards per game.
The offensive line has allowed nine sacks and 17 tackles for loss.
The defense is a much different story, tied for the most turnovers gained in the country with 10. They also have a Plus-8 turnover differential. Senior linebacker Danny Stutsman has been a wrecking ball, amassing 33 tackles, including 21 solo tackles, in the first three games.
Brent Venables is known for his master schemes, and they will be in play for this top matchup. Dating back to 2018 and his time as defensive coordinator with the Clemson Tigers, Venables is 7-1 against SEC opponents in his last eight games.
It’s the first time since 1978 a ranked Sooners team has been more than a four-point underdog at home.
