The Sun’s Kevin Brockway and David Whitley wrap up Florida football’s 45-28 win at Mississippi State

After a few miserable failures, Florida football got a test it could handle on Saturday. The Gators passed their Mississippi State exam but they didn’t handle it as cleanly as fans hoped.
Offense: A
Graham Mertz looked like Heisman material. There was no letdown when DJ Lagway came in. Young players were impressive and the offensive line actually opened some holes.
Defense: D
The Gators had a big stop on fourth-and-goal from the 1. Otherwise, the Bulldogs’ hurry-up offense gave UF problems. That doesn’t bode well for the next game against UCF.
Special Teams: B
The kicking game was solid, as usual. The only real hiccup was allowing a 38-yard kickoff return. Extra credit to long-snapper Rocco Underwood for sprinting downfield and plastering a returner for no gain.
Coaching: B-minus
Billy Napier had the offense ready. Whatever the coaching staff is trying to get across to the defense, it’s not working.
Overall: B
The offense showed life, and the players showed they haven’t given up on the season. If only they could play the Bulldogs every Saturday.
