FIW staff picks Notre Dame vs Miami (OH) plus the top games of Week 4

After absolutely throttling Purdue last weekend, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team returns home as Miami (OH) comes to town.

For the Irish to accomplish what they did last week, they’ll have to forget about it and focus on the Redhawks. Unfortunately, there will be multiple new starters, at key positions due to a myriad of injuries suffered against the Boilermakers.

That doesn’t matter much across the college football landscape, as Week 4 is set to take place. The Fighting Irish Wire crew of Geoffrey Clark, Tim Healey and Michael Chen pick the winner of the top games of the week along with Notre Dame against Miami (OH).

Notre Dame goes up in ESPN’s Football Power Index after Purdue blowoutWEST LAFAYETTE, INDIANA – SEPTEMBER 14: Jeremiyah Love #4 of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish runs the ball for a touchdown during the first half against the Purdue Boilermakers at Ross-Ade Stadium on September 14, 2024 in West Lafayette, Indiana. All the stars are aligning for Notre Dame to have an easy victory here. Unlike Northern Illinois, Miami (Ohio) isn’t coming to South Bend riding high and mighty after a dominant victory over an inferior opponent. In fact, the RedHawks themselves have been the inferior opponent in the games they’ve played so far. No reason to think this will be any different.

Notre Dame didn't stop in the second half against Purdue.Notre Dame Fighting Irish tight end Cooper Flanagan (87) and Notre Dame Fighting Irish tight end Kevin Bauman (84) celebrates in front of Purdue Boilermakers defensive back Dillon Thieneman (31) after a Notre Dame Fighting Irish touchdown Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024, during the NCAA football game at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Ind. Notre Dame Fighting Irish won 66-7.

Notre Dame has, hopefully, learned its lesson about overlooking MAC teams after the Northern Illinois debacle. Let’s also note here that perhaps the Huskies are a MAC title contender and they’re better than anyone expected. That’s likely not the case with Miami (OH). A focused, angry Irish squad that played much better at Purdue should be able to take care of business at home.

Coming off a huge bounce back win, the Irish look to keep the good times rolling this weekend. Fortunately for Notre Dame, at least on paper, the Redhawks seem like willing participants. Like last week, this really isn’t about the opponent, it’s more about if this team comes out with an intent to dominate. I think they will, and everyone in Notre Dame Stadium will go home happy.
