4-star edge from D.C. just received Ohio State offer, but that’s not his only Ohio connection: Buckeyes Recruiting

COLUMBUS, Ohio — When the Ohio State football program offered a scholarship to Carter Meadows on Monday, the moment wasn’t lost on the four-star class of 2026 edge rusher from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, D.C.

Ohio State joins a list of powerhouse programs Meadows holds offers from, including Georgia, Texas A&M, Michigan and Florida State, among others. He is ranked as the nation’s No. 105 prospect and No. 12 edge rusher in the class by 247Sports.com.

“I’m really appreciative, most grateful,” Meadows told cleveland.com “I’ve known Ohio State since grade school — a lot of history, a great program. The fact that they’re interested in me is a great feeling and an incentive to keep working.”

Meadows, who measures at 6-foot-6 and 225 pounds, doesn’t have any official visits lined up to any schools at the moment. But he plans on getting to a couple of his prospective schools’ games this fall to experience the home gameday atmosphere.

What’s important for Meadows

Meadows talked about what was matters most to him while looking at schools.

“At all these schools [I’m getting recruited by], I want a great relationship with my coaches, especially my defensive line coach, edge coach,” Meadows said. “I want a great education as well, I feel like that’s very important. Those are the two main things I’m looking for.”

Ohio State defensive line and associate head coach Larry Johnson and Meadows communicate on an almost daily basis, he said.

“We talk almost every day, he sends me daily scriptures. We have great conversations and he’s always telling me how he wants to keep building a relationship, and I’m looking forward to it,” Meadows said.

“I love Coach Johnson. He’s very experienced, regarded as one of the best in the game, so the fact that he’s interested in me, I love that.”

Meadows is going to take the recruiting process slowly, he said, as basketball is also an avenue of interest. A power forward on the hardwood, Meadows even holds a Division I college basketball offer from American University.

“I just want to go to a program where I’m really loved, you know?” Meadows said.

Ohio connections

Meadows and Gonzaga actually opened the season traveling to Ohio to take on Springfield High School.

It was a seven-hour-plus journey by bus, but the game was a special one for Meadows. He said his father grew up in Cleveland, and he has a handful of cousins who live in Columbus as well.

“I actually have a lot of family in Ohio, so they got to go to the Springfield game. It was a great experience,” Meadows said.

Traveling across state lines and staying in a hotel with his teammates was a great bonding opportunity for the team, he said.

Gonzaga defeated Springfield 14-6, which made the journey back home that much easier.

Gonzaga is undefeated and looking forward to the rest of the season according to Meadows.

“Personally I feel like I’m having a good season. I keep getting after quarterbacks and into the backfield,” Meadows said. “For the team, we’re 3-0, and that’s all we can be right now. I’m proud of that, and proud of my team. We’re going game by game and getting ready to go win 12.”

‘A joy to coach’

Gonzaga College football coach Randy Trivers, who won USA Today’s National Coach of the Year in 2018, said what separates Meadows is that he has a combination of physical qualities, football ability and classroom approach, merged into one student-athlete.

“Carter’s a joy to coach,” Trivers said. “He’s a coachable athlete, meaning he’s not afraid to get better. He’ll take constructive criticism, he wants to be pushed, he’s got a really strong work ethic and a positive attitude.

“A guy like Carter Meadows is going to come in and have a really strong work ethic, he’s going to come in ready and willing to work… he’s going to have the right attitude in the locker room, be a team player, and a really intelligent player,” Trivers said.

“He’ll grow and learn, and he’s still got a lot to grow and learn, but he has very good instinct and very good football IQ. That’s what makes him unique, when you put it all together.”
