Bismarck Marathon set this weekend

BISMARCK TRIBUNE STAFF

The 43rd running of the Bismarck Marathon is this weekend, based at the state Capitol grounds. Runners from 45 states and three countries are scheduled to compete.

The event is billed as North Dakota’s longest-running marathon. A total of 1,834 runners crossed the finish line in 2023, the most since records began being kept in 2007. A record number of volunteers were also a part of the 2023 race, with 415 volunteers supporting runners along the route in various roles.

A big change this year is that marathon-related events will be on Saturday and Sunday, rather than Thursday through Saturday as in past years.

There is a 5K and a 10K run on Saturday, as well as a mini-marathon for kids, a dog race and a “Mascot Dash.” On Sunday there are full, half and relay marathon races. The course is USATF-certified, which allows runners to qualify for races such as the Boston Marathon.

“We are thrilled to continue this 43-year tradition with a move to a new schedule format featuring a weekend of races and festivities for people of all ages,” race Co-director Patrick Johnson said. “This race has worked hard to do so much for our community throughout the years by engaging runners to promote health and wellness while making significant annual contributions to local charities.”

The Bismarck Marathon nonprofit last year donated $55,125 to 28 local charitable organizations.
