Obama, what a Surprise for the USA Team

A special fan for the USA Solheim Cup team, which challenged the Europe team from September 13 to 15. In Gainesville, Virginia, the American golfers received a surprise visit from Barack Obama, former president of the United States.

Obama, news

During a dinner of the stars and stripes team, led by Stacy Lewis, Obama wanted to bring his greeting to the 12 champions. A great golf enthusiast, in 2010, during his first term, Obama received the American team that won the 2009 Solheim Cup at the White House.

An episode that was repeated in 2015, with the former president who is now ready to cheer for the USA team again. The Solheim Cup is a biennial golf tournament between teams of professional women players from Europe and the USA, and is contested in the same format as the Ryder Cup.

The initiative for this competition was born from Karsten Solheim, founder of the American brand PING, which manufactures golf equipment. The first tournament was held in 1990 and was subsequently held in various venues in even-numbered years until 2002.

After the Ryder Cup schedule was changed, it has been held in odd-numbered years since 2003 to avoid date conflicts. The tournament is contested over three days with a total of twenty-eight matches: eight foursomes, eight fourballs and twelve singles on the final day.

This is exactly the same format as the Ryder Cup. The European team selects only seven entrants on the basis of the Ladies European Tour (LET), with the other five chosen from among the best European players who also play on the LPGA Tour.

Since 2007, five LET qualifiers have been selected and four others based on the world list. This change was due to the predominance of prize money in the USA.
In addition, the two captains have “captain’s picks”, meaning they can choose players from their respective regions as they see fit.
