AG’s Call to Action on Trafficking

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) – On Friday’s KGVO Talk Back show, an emotional Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen discussed the topic of human trafficking curriculum now in place in Missoula’s public schools.

“Human trafficking is an issue that really gets my blood boiling,” began Knudsen. “That’s what I’m very passionate about. We passed a very large anti-human trafficking statute last (legislative) session and changed a bunch of laws. We beefed up the human trafficking section here at DCI, (Department of Criminal Investigation) within the Department of Justice, so we do a lot more investigations, but the single best thing we can do is educate young people.”

Attorney General Austin Knudsen Discussed Human Trafficking on Talk Back

Knudsen described the ways that human traffickers target young Montanans.

“Young people in Montana are the number one targeted group by human traffickers,” he said. “Usually, what this looks like is kids being lured into that world by online predators, and that’s just a fact. They do it with social media, and a lot of online video games. What starts off looking like a harmless chat suddenly turns into very quickly, a risky human trafficking situation. That’s how these people are recruiting young people.”

Knudsen Said Curriculum is Available for Montana’s Public Schools

Knudsen wants to open the communication lines for Montanans to get this information out to as many people as possible.

“We’ve put together a comprehensive curriculum,” he said. “We want teachers talking about this. We want parents talking about this. We want school counselors talking about this. It’s a difficult subject, but it’s one that we can’t afford not to talk about, so we’ve tried to make this as easy as we can.”

Knudsen Provided a One-Stop Website for Details

Knudsen provided a one-stop website where young people, parents and educators can get more information about this issue of human trafficking in Montana.

“Go to DOJ.mt.gov forward slash, human trafficking, all one word that takes you to one web page,” he said. There are short form YouTube videos, long form YouTube videos, written curriculum, and guided classroom discussion. Go check it out. I really, really recommend teachers, administrators, parents, pastors, school counselors, check this stuff out and talk to the young people in your lives, because they are the ones who are most at risk from human traffickers.”
