Minnesota developing sustainable aviation fuel blending facility

Minnesota is looking to make a splash in the sustainable aviation fuel market.

Peter Frosch with the Greater MSP Partnership says a coalition that includes Delta Airlines and Xcel Energy is working toward the first large-scale, end-to-end SAF value chain in the United States.

“What we’ve announced are major solutions that will open up this Minnesota SAF economy in 2025.”

He tells Brownfield Delta is collaborating with Flint Hills Resources to develop a blending facility south of the Twin Cities at its Pine Bend refinery in Rosemount that will likely be the first plant between the coasts that can blend neat SAF with conventional jet fuel.

“There are almost none of these blending facilities in the country, and they’re obviously critical building blocks to creating an at-scale SAF economy anywhere.”

Frosch says there is huge market potential for farmers because the blending facility plans to use multiple agricultural inputs to produce sustainable aviation fuel.
