The final pair of USGA national championships for the 2024 season begin on Saturday on opposite sides of the country, and the state of Tennessee will have representatives in both events.

The 62nd U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur will take place at Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle, Wash. where Nashville’s Sarah Lebrun Ingram will be the lone competitor from the Volunteer State among the 132 participants.

Ingram, 58, is a three-time U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion and the 1993 U.S. Women’s Amateur runner-up. After taking a sabbatical of more than 20 years from golf to raise her family and to deal with a diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, Ingram still since captained the USA Curtis Cup Team to consecutive victories in 2021 (Wales) and 2022 (Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa.) The Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame and Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame inductee also represented the USA in three Curtis Cups in the 1990s.

She returned to competition in 2019 and won the 2020 Tennessee Women’s Senior Amateur and the inaugural LNGA Senior Amateur title in 2021 at Anthem (Ariz.) Golf & Country Club. Last year, she qualified for her first U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur in more than 20 years, advancing to the Round of 32 at Stonewall in Elverson, Pa. Most recently, she advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2023 U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur which earned her an exemption into this year’s tournament.

Ingram begins play at 4:05 p.m. Saturday in the first of two days of stroke play, and will go off in Sunday’s round at 11:35 a.m. To follow the action, go to US Senior Women’s Am scoring.

The 43rd U.S. Mid-Amateur championship is being held outside of Richmond, Va. at Kinloch Golf Club in Manakin-Sabot. Independence Golf Club in Midlothian will also serve as a co-host during this weekend’s stroke play competition.

Six golfers who call Tennessee home will be among the 264 players entered in the field. Included are John Jonas of Nashville, Aaron Ingalls of Jackson, Lucas Armstrong of Church Hill, Tyler LeRoy of Nashville, Jerre Maynor Jr. of Nashville and David Howser of Memphis.

Another area competitor ls former UAB golfer Hunter Hawkins of Ft. Payne, Ala., who made it to the Round of 16 in the 2021 U.S. Mid-Amateur.

Four participants from the recent U.S. Senior Amateur hosted by The Honors Course will be making an appearance including runner-up Dan Sullivan of Pasadena, Calif. Others in the field are Michael McCoy of Des Moines, Iowa, Rick Stimmel of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Todd White of Spartanburg, S.C.

Also earning an entry is this year’s John T. Lupton Memorial mid-amateur champion Joseph Deraney of Belden, Miss.

Jonas, 30, spent his freshman year at LSU before finishing his collegiate career at College of Charleston. The former professional golfer with PGA Tour Canada qualified in Nicholasville, Ky.

Ingalls, 38, recently teamed with Jeff Reuter to capture the Tennessee Mid-Amateur Four-Ball championship. The 2018 Tennessee State Amateur champion grew up north of Birmingham, Ala. and moved to Jackson to play football at Lambuth University.  Ingalls qualified in Farmington, Mo. and he and Reuter made it to the Round of 32 in the 2022 U.S. Amateur Four-Ball.

Armstrong, 32, qualified in Huntingdon, W. Va. and is a former MTSU golfer. He advanced into the first round of match play at the 2021 U.S. Mid-Amateur and captured the 2023 Tennessee Mid-Amateur Four-Ball with Payne Denman.

LeRoy, 33, began his college career at Furman before finishing competing for Lipscomb University. He birdied the final two holes at the Tennessee Grasslands qualifier to nab the third and final spot.

Maynor Jr., 40, played collegiately at Sewanee and is a member of the school’s Athletics Hall of Fame. He was a co-medalist at the Tennessee Grasslands qualifier.

Howser, 54, was originally an alternate from the Maumelle, Ark. qualifier but was elevated into the field last week. A third-team All-American at Arizona in 1994, Howser competed in seven events on the PGA Tour including a top 10 finish in 2002.

Both the U.S. Senior Women’s Amateur and the U.S. Mid-Amateur will take the low 64 scores after Sunday’s final round of stroke play to advance into Monday’s match play. The Round of 32 and Round of 16 matches will take place Tuesday, followed by the Quarterfinals and Semifinals on Wednesday. Both championship finals will occur on Thursday, with the U.S. Mid-Amateur consisting of 36 holes.

Foothills Invitational Results: The Tennessee Section PGA conducted its Foothills Invitational this week at Green Meadow Country Club in Alcoa. Teams consisted of a PGA Professional along with three amateurs with scoring including two best balls per hole.
