US presidential election 2024: Kamala Harris’s spouse Doug Emhoff slams Arkansas governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders for ‘no biological children’ comment

Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, has slammed Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who recently criticised Harris, saying she “doesn’t have anything to keep her humble” because she does not have biological children.

Harris, 59, is the stepmother to Cole Emhoff, 30, and Ella Emhoff, 25, her husband’s children from his first marriage.

Speaking at a campaign event in Brooklyn, New York, on Wednesday, Emhoff defended his wife, Harris.

“We know that all parents, no matter how you become one, make the same sacrifices and revel in the same joys of raising children as any parent anywhere,” said Emhoff, as reported by ABC News.

“As if keeping women humble, whether you have children or not, is something we should strive for. It is not. Women in this country will never humble themselves before Donald Trump,” he added.

Emhoff referred to Sanders’s remarks as “unbelievable” and expressed pride in his blended family, which includes Harris’s stepchildren, Cole and Ella Emhoff, from his previous marriage.

“I have an amazing wife, an incredible ex-wife, and a big, beautiful, blessed family,” Emhoff said, as reported by Reuters.

DOUG’S EX-WIFE IN HARRIS’S DEFENCE

Kerstin Emhoff, Doug’s ex-wife and mother of Cole and Ella, also came to Harris’s defence.

In response to a video of Sanders’s comments posted on the social media platform X, she wrote, “Cole and Ella keep us inspired to make the world a better place. I do it through storytelling. Kamala Harris has spent her entire career working for the people, ALL families. That keeps you pretty humble.”

Sanders made the controversial remarks during a Michigan town hall with former President Donald Trump on Tuesday, saying, “So my kids keep me humble. Unfortunately, Kamala Harris doesn’t have anything keeping her humble.”

During a visit to a Bitcoin bar in Greenwich Village, New York, on Wednesday, Trump was asked about Sanders’s comments but offered little on the matter, saying, “Well, I just don’t know what I think about it, you know,” according to ABC News.

This is not the first time Kamala Harris has been targeted over her personal life. Before this event, Donald Trump’s vice presidential pick, Ohio Senator JD Vance, commented in 2021 and called Harris and other women in politics “childless cat ladies”.

Vance’s “childless cat ladies” remark sparked an immense backlash.

American pop star Taylor Swift, just after the first presidential debate between Harris and Trump, endorsed Kamala Harris in a post on Instagram, where she wrote at the end, “Taylor Swift, Childless Cat Lady”.
