NORWAY, Mich. (WLUC) – Upper Michigan has been nationally recognized for its fall colors.
A group of four took off on a rafting trip from Niagara, Wisconsin Thursday morning.
Even though peak fall color is likely still three to four weeks away there are some signs of the changing season along the Menominee River.
True North Outpost of Norway, Michigan guides this trip.
True North Outpost General Manager Evan Blagec says the late summer to early fall are fantastic times for outdoor activities.
“Lots of folks think that once we hit September and the leaves start to change, we’re done with summer weather, but we’re not,” Blagec said. “So, we are doing rafting trips like I said every single day, tons of fun to be out here at this water level, the water’s still warm, the weather’s still beautiful.”
More people might take advantage of the mild September weather, as USA Today named the U.P. the best destination for fall foliage in 2024.
U.P. Travel and Recreation Executive Director Tom Nemacheck says it’s not the first time Upper Michigan has won the honor.
“It’s also exciting we’ve won it three out of five years,” Nemacheck said. “So, thanks to our friends in Vermont and stuff we beat them again. Fall is incredibly important to us. I want to say in the last ten years, fall has become an extension of summer.”
Nemacheck says fall activities and the volunteers who run them also help bring visitors.
“Events make a big difference,” Nemacheck said. “They make things consistent for visitors. Events sort of like fill in the gaps. And the U-P depends on a lot of volunteers.”
True North Outpost is offering a discount on all of its trips until the end of its season, October 15th.
