Silver Lake Sand Dunes’ fall festival named in the top 10 best by USA Today

MEARS, MI — A bite into a crisp apple, the smoke wafting off a barbecue and the waves rolling on Lake Michigan − it’s not a Pure Michigan ad, it’s the Apple & BBQ festival.

Every year the Silver Lake Sand Dunes Apple & BBQ festival draws a crowd of 15,000. This year, the lakeside festival caught USA Today’s attention.

The festival made the top ten list for Readers’ Choice for Best Fall Festival. The publication’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards asked travel enthusiasts to vote for their top places to celebrate the changing seasons.

Silver Lake’s festival landed at number seven.

Every September, more than a 100 food and artisan vendors line Golden Township Park near downtown Silver Lake for the two-day festival.

In addition to sweet and savory apple and BBQ treats, the festival also has a classic auto and ORV show and a craft show.

Of course, what’s a festival without a little competition. There’s also the apple pie contest and a 5K on the Mac Dune Rides.

With Lake Michigan as its backdrop, USA Today notes the festival celebrates the beauty of the surrounding area. But the highlights, of course, are fresh apples, smoked meats and craft beers.

This year the event, which ran Sept. 6-7, celebrated 20 years. Learn more about next year’s event at applebbqfestival.com and plan a trip to Silver Lake at thinkdunes.com.
