It’s been a long road since the first US states signed on to Apple’s Digital ID initiative three years ago, but it’s finally starting to gain some traction.
Despite eight states pledging support for digital IDs in Apple Wallet when the feature rolled out in iOS 15.1, only four showed up: Arizona, Maryland, Colorado, and Georgia. Others, such as Florida, went in their own direction with unique apps, and California did the same last year for its first phase.
Until a few months ago, it looked like the list of states wasn’t ever going to expand beyond those initial four, but then things started moving again over the summer when Ohio became number five, California added iPhone support to its state ID system, and Hawaii signed on, bringing the total to seven all in one fell swoop.
While California only committed to supporting digital IDs in Apple Wallet last month, Apple has just announced that they’re now live, letting Californians ditch the state’s standalone CA DMV Wallet app and put their driver’s license or state ID alongside the rest of their payment cards and passes in Apple’s Wallet app.
Enabling California residents to seamlessly add and present their IDs with their iPhone or Apple Watch represents a significant step in replacing the physical wallet with a more secure and private digital wallet. The launch also represents an important milestone in the rollout of IDs in Apple Wallet. Not only is California one of the largest states in the U.S., but it’s also our own backyard, and we’re excited to bring an easy and transparent way to present IDs in our home state.Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet
Like Ohio, California has already taken steps to ensure that its digital driver’s licenses can be used for more than just the TSA screening checkpoints that accompanied the initial rollouts in early 2022. Users will be able to present their ID in Apple Wallet for age verification to businesses that use apps such as Tap2iD Mobile, VeriScan, and Mobile ID Verify, all of which leverage Apple’s ID Verifier API, which was introduced last year in iOS 17 to allow digital IDs to be checked directly from an iPhone with no special hardware required.
Apple also adds that digital driver’s licenses from any of the seven supported states can be used at Apple Store locations across the US for order pickups and Genius Bar appointments. Apple Digital IDs can also be presented electronically in select iPhone apps, such as Turo, with additional noting that CLEAR, MyChart, and Uber Eats are coming soon.
The good news is that this is just the start. Apple’s mobile driver’s license initiative finally appears to be gaining steam, as the company announced today that Montana, New Mexico, and West Virginia will also soon support IDs in Wallet. That will bring the total number of states to 10, reaching almost 90 million people.
Apple’s Digital IDs are also expected to expand internationally for the first time next year as Japan brings its My Number Card to Apple Wallet.
