A new ranking listed the ten best grocery stores, and Tennessee is home to four − soon to be five.
USA TODAY’s 10Best released its ranking of the “10 best grocery stores in the US that you need to check out” this past week. The list was determined by an expert panel selecting stores and readers voting on them. Four of the top 10 have a total of 105 locations across the Volunteer State. This number will increase if the top-ranked grocery store follows through with plans to expand to Tennessee.
Can you guess which of Tennessee’s grocery stores made the list?
Hy-Vee
The highest ranked grocery store on the list is Hy-Vee, and while Tennessee doesn’t have any current locations, the brand did have plans to expand into the state in the coming years.
“Hy-Vee works with farmers to provide locally grown fruits and vegetables, and many of the locations offer food counters with colossal salad bars and items like meatloaf, Asian food, pizza, and fried chicken,” the ranking said.
In 2023, Hy-Vee was eyeing a location in Bartlett, Tennessee to build a 113,000-square-foot store, but the plans have been put on hold, according to Bartlett Mayor David Parsons who said the company is re-evaluating its expansion plan with other projects. The grocer also proposed a location in Spring Hill, Tennessee.
The Fresh Market
Fresh Market ranked as the second best grocery store and has 8 locations in Tennessee.
“The original Fresh Market was inspired by the food markets of Europe — a place where shoppers could have a more intimate and personalized experience than the warehouse-style supermarkets of the time,” the ranking wrote.
Aldi
ALDI came in as the sixth best grocery store in the United states. It has 57 locations across Tennessee.
The 10Best list wrote, “Aldi’s no-frills shopping that results in affordable prices, its large supply of fresh fruits and vegetables that are restocked every day, and the store’s liberal return policy called the ‘Twice As Nice Guarantee.'”
Publix Super Markets
Publix is located only in Middle and East Tennessee with 34 locations. It ranked at the No. 7 best grocery store.
Publix is listed as a top ten grocery store because it is “known for its clean, bright stores and friendly staff, in addition to a wide range of high-quality products catering to different tastes and dietary needs, Publix stands out as a supermarket that prioritizes customer satisfaction.”
Trader Joe’s
Trader Joe’s, the eighth best grocery store, has 6 locations across the state. Three of the stores are located in Nashville.
The list cites the Trader Joe’s brand as one of the reasons for its devotees saying, “You won’t find a lot of big brands, but you will find cult favorites, like Everything but the Bagel Sesame Seasoning blend, mandarin orange chicken, dark chocolate peanut butter cups, and Unexpected Cheddar.”
