PAWTUCKET, R.I. (WLNE) — Hasbro might be moving its headquarters from Rhode Island to Boston.
But that’s a big “might,” according to a report from the Boston Business Journal.
The report says Hasbro officials have recently toured multiple downtown Boston office buildings for a potential relocation.
The headquarters is currently located on Newport Avenue in Pawtucket.
This comes after Hasbro announced 20 percent of its workforce would be laid off by 2025 because of a lack of business.
The state rep who represents Pawtucket tells ABC6 that the news came as a surprise.
“I am a little shocked. I think that we have been working on this for a couple of years. I believe that the city and the state have been holding their end,” said Pawtucket and Central Falls State Representative Karen Alzate.
“It’s bringing us back to the table which I never think is a bad idea. We want to hear what Hasbro needs from us. We are building the stadium and we are trying to build a city that is fun for everyone that lives there.”
Hasbro released a statement to ABC6 saying in part:
… as Hasbro continues to evolve, we’re exploring options for our global headquarters to make sure it is a space that can best serve our employees, partners, and business needs for years to come. We’re taking our time, evaluating all options that can best support our team’s creativity and innovation, and will share updates on our progress.
This news comes in what’s been a tumultuous few years for Pawtucket with the PawSox leaving for Worcester.
