North Korea’s superior ball possession stifled a previously vibrant USA, which fell 1-0 in the U-20 Women’s World Cup semifinal.
The USA, coming off dramatic overtime wins over Mexico and Germany, failed to keep pace with the North Koreans, which won its five games in 90 minutes and outscored foes 23-4. The Koreans, who scored in the 22nd minute, outshot the USA 18-7 and had 12 corner kicks to the USA’s three.
Next up: The USA faces the Netherlands in the third-place game Saturday, Sept. 21. A win would mark the best U.S. showing since its fourth-place finish in 2016.
