USA: New Jersey launches new income-based EV subsidy scheme

Under the new scheme, EV buyers can qualify for an additional 2,000-dollar incentive that can be applied directly to the purchase or lease at the point of sale. The ‘Charge Up+’ programme is income-based, meaning single households cannot earn more than 75,000 dollars per year to qualify. The cap for a household is 150,000 dollars/year.

The new scheme is an addition to subsidy programmes already in place in New Jersey. The ‘Charge Up’ programme is already in its fifth consecutive year. Through it, all EVs with a listing price below $55,000 qualify for a 2,000-dollar subsidy. This scheme is not income-based, meaning all New Jersey residents can apply. According to the New Jersey government, more than 37,000 EV incentives have already been approved under the ‘Charge Up’ programme. It also funded 6,900 EV chargers, as the scheme also offers a $250 rebate for qualifying Level 2 home chargers.

“I’m thrilled to announce this additional step toward ensuring every New Jerseyan can choose clean transportation, regardless of their income,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “My administration continues to prioritize lowering emissions and improving air quality in our communities, no matter the zip code, by making EVs more affordable and accessible to all.”

“Through the introduction of Charge Up+, the Murphy Administration is once again building upon the success of its highly popular EV incentive program,” said Christine Guhl-Sadovy, President of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU). “Combined with the Charge Up base incentive and federal EV tax credit, this additional incentive will further expand the number of New Jersey families who can reap the environmental and economic benefits of clean transportation.”
