Opening of Nebraska’s first Lego store in Gretna has fans ‘jumping out of our shoes’

Lovers of Lego bricks are snap-happy over the opening of Nebraska’s first ever Lego store.

The store is set to open Friday at 10 a.m. in Gretna.

The opening has been highly anticipated by fans since rumors of a store began circulating more than a year ago.

Members of the Lincoln and Omaha LEGO User Group, a community of adult Lego enthusiasts, “are jumping out of our shoes with excitement,” group president Brian Hirt of Lincoln said Tuesday.

“I know that many of us, myself included, will be taking off work for the big day,” Hirt said.

The 2,131-square-foot store is located in a bay at Nebraska Crossing shopping mall off Interstate 80 and Highway 31.

According to Lego officials, the store will offer special promotions, including giveaways, to celebrate.

Customers will find “the largest range of Lego products, including many Lego retail exclusives,” the company said in a press release.

Exclusives are those products only available in a Lego store or at Lego.com.

The store will feature a mural Lego activity that gives visitors a chance to help build a mystery mural inside the store.

A Pick and Build Wall, a wall with multiple containers of Lego bricks, will allow visitors to use their creativity to build while in store.

Another feature is a Build a Minifigure Tower, where visitors can create a figure by picking the pieces from the tower.

Lego’s iconic connecting bricks, first produced in 1949, have found their way into children’s toy chests and playrooms for decades.

The company sells buildable play sets and models based on history, pop culture, movies, science, nature and more.

The toys range in complexity from basic brick sets for youngsters to sophisticated models of the solar system, NASA’s Artemis Space Launch System, carnivorous plants like the Venus Flytrap, and even a replica of Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night.

The stubby Lego figures with the C-shaped hands have also starred in animated features.

The addition of the Gretna store takes the total number of stores in the United States up to 123 including flagship locations in Chicago, IL, and New York City, the company said.

Until recently, the closest Lego stores to Nebraska were in Kansas City and Minneapolis.

A Lego store opened this year in the Des Moines area. That store is located at the Jordan Creek Town Center in West Des Moines.

Travis Blue, vice president of Americas and EMEA Brand Retail Stores, the Lego Group, said the Gretna store “will deliver unforgettable immersive experiences with the widest range of LEGO products, hands-on play opportunities for our visitors, exclusive promotions, and fun events held in-store.”

The following promotions are on tap for the opening, the release said:

Sept. 20-22: I Love LEGO Store tile giveaway.

Sept. 20: LEGO Store Yellow Truck for all LEGO Insiders with a purchase of $75 or more. LEGO Insiders is a members-only reward program.

Sept. 21: LEGO Store set with all purchases of $120 or more.

Sept. 22-29: I Love LEGO Store tote with all purchases of $50 or more.

The Lego Group is a privately held company based in Billund, Denmark.
