Browns tackle issues grow as Dawand Jones misses practice with injury

(This story was updated to add new information.)

BEREA — The tackle situation for the Browns has only gotten more cloudy as the season as progressed.

The Browns continue to wait for the game return of left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. and right tackle Jack Conklin. The pair have been inactive for the first two games of the season as they continue to ramp-up from knee injuries that ended their 2023 seasons.

On Wednesday, though, a new wrinkle was thrown into the mix as the Browns began preparing for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. Right tackle Dawand Jones was not expected to practice because of his own knee injury.

Jones was one of three players the Browns had listed on their pre-practice injury report. The other two were tight end David Njoku (ankle) and running back Pierre Strong (hamstring).

Both Wills and Conklin are expected to practice on Wednesday. Stefanski, though, wouldn’t comment on any of the tackles’ status for the Giants game.

James Hudson III has started the first two games at left tackle, the first two starts of his NFL career at the position. He’s given up, per Pro Football Focus, a team-high-tying 10 pressures this season, with five hits and five hurries.

Conklin has worked some at left tackle since returning to practice on Aug. 27 after his devastating knee injury sustained in the 2023 season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals. Wills, who returned to practice on Sept. 4, has been out since suffering a right knee injury last Nov. 5 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Jones has started and played a majority of the Browns’ first two games at right tackle. He missed two offensive snaps in the opener against the Dallas Cowboys with a shoulder issue, then missed 11 snaps during Sunday’s win at the Jacksonville Jaguars with cramping issues.

When Jones has been on the field, he has built upon what was a strong rookie season. He has been credited, according to Pro Football Focus, with just two pressures allowed in two games.
