Movies Filmed in Massachusetts to Enjoy This Spooky Season

It’s that time of year; the spooky season is quickly approaching.

There is plenty to love about the Halloween season. The season brings so much to enjoy, from jack o’ lanterns and pumpkin spice to cozy nights spent watching beloved classic films.

As the spooky season draws near, Netflix and other streaming services are queued with classic horror films preparing you for a night of thrills. Although you have the convenience of watching these types of movies any time of the year, there’s just something about immersing yourself in them during Halloween.

The best part is that there are so many genres to choose from.

Personally, I am not a big fan of slasher movies. I can do everything else, but the blood and gore is something I can do without. A touch of suspense and a few jump scares is enough for me.

For film enthusiasts, we know that New England has become quite the hub for filmmaking. Especially in Massachusetts, several movie sets have made their way to the Commonwealth, creating movie magic for the big screens over the years.

The iconic shark film Jaws has become a landmark for Martha’s Vineyard after shooting there over 40 years ago. Another noteworthy mention is Leonardo DiCaprio’s psychological thriller Shutter Island, which has ties to Boston Harbor and will have you covering your eyes in suspense.

These are just a couple of examples, but the list goes on. To make your job easier, we’ve compiled a list of scary movies that were filmed right here in Massachusetts.

Just make sure you have a movie buddy or a comfort blanket nearby to hold onto when those thrilling moments come up.

While most of the selections lean towards horror, there are some fun and light-hearted options that still embody the spirit of the spooky season.

Keep scrolling to discover some classics and perhaps find a few new additions to your Halloween movie watch this year.
