Week 2 of the 2024 NFL season is in the books, and several former Iowa State football players had huge hands in their teams’ performances.
The collection of ex-Cyclones in the NFL continues to grow, with several more added to rosters this season after having around a dozen consistently active last season. While the star-studded names like Brock Purdy, Breece Hall, Allen Lazard and David Montgomery continue to shine week after week, several other names Iowa State fans will recognize are making significant impacts at the pro level too.
With that, here are three ex-Cyclones who stood out in Week 2 of the NFL season.

Purdy will be on this list most weeks and for good reason. The San Francisco 49ers have invested full-throttle in the former Iowa State quarterback, and Purdy continues to reward the confidence with solid stat lines.
Even with San Francisco down running back Christian McCaffery in Sunday’s 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, Purdy still managed a decent day. He finished 28-for-36 for 319 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Purdy also added two carries for 12 yards.
It was a rough day up-front for the 49ers as Purdy was sacked six times in the loss. He found tight end George Kittle for a 7-yard touchdown pass late in the second quarter and still had San Francisco within reach late. Purdy, though, will enter his Week 3 contest at the Rams likely down top wide receiver Deebo Samuel (calf strain).
New York Jets running back Breece Hall (20) runs the ball against the Tennessee Titans during the first half at Nissan Stadium.
New York again carries a significant Iowa State flavor this year with three former Cyclones on the roster. Hall led the way with a nice showing in Sunday’s 24-17 road win over the Tennessee Titans.
Hall finished with 62 rushing yards on 14 carries, punctuating his ground performance with an impressive 30-yard scamper. Hall also added seven catches for 52 yards and a touchdown as he locked back in with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
With Montgomery somewhat bottled up in Detroit’s 20-16 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (11 carries, 34 yards, TD; 4 catches, 35 yards), Hall took top honors among the former Iowa State running backs in Week 2.

McDonald has been hunting a breakout game ever since New York took him in the first round last season. Sunday was it.
The former Iowa State pass rusher sacked Titans quarterback Will Levis three times in the Jets’ 24-17 win, finishing with four tackles overall. McDonald equaled his 2023 sack production this season in just two games.
