Video: Highlights of Iowa commit Mason Woods in win over Urbandale
Iowa commit Mason Woods helped West defeat Urbandale to capture their first win of the 2024 season.
Iowa City High at Iowa City West
Iowa City High (1-2), Iowa City West (2-1): Iowa City West has really come into form over the past two games. Since their Week 1 loss to Iowa City Liberty, the Trojans have earned wins over Urbandale and Muscatine.
With quarterback Jack Wallace under center, the Trojans have had some big-time playmaking from Mason Woods and Julian Manson, who have combined for 558 yards and seven touchdowns in the air.
City High won their first game of the season against Ames in Week 3. A lot of their success also came on the offensive side of the ball. Led by quarterback Bobby Bacon, four players have recorded more than 100 receiving yards this season: Dominic Salibi, Chayse Newton, Connor Cross and Parker Sutherland.
There’s no question that both offenses will make some type of impact. The game will come down to which defense will hold up. The Little Hawks have allowed 37.7 points per game, while the Trojans have allowed 34.6 points per game. Look for Iowa City West’s defense to step up in the fourth quarter, which will allow their ultra-talented offense to make much-needed plays down the stretch. Iowa City West 38, Iowa City High 35
Mount Vernon at Solon
Mount Vernon (3-0), Solon (3-0): Solon is fresh off a 55-2 blowout over Central DeWitt in Week 3. The Spartans have showcased their dominance with a 35.7-point differential this season, but Mount Vernon will present a new challenge.
The Mustangs are also unbeaten with wins over Monticello, Union Community and Benton. Their defense has been impressive. They’ve posted 24 sacks and have forced five turnovers. On the other hand, Solon’s offense has really hit its stride with no signs of slowing down.
Quarterback Tyler Bell has thrown for 525 yards for six touchdowns and two interceptions. Eddie Johnson has controlled the backfield. He’s rushed for 461 yards and seven touchdowns on 53 carries. As a team, the Spartans have averaged about 315 yards of offense and have outscored opponents 130-23 in three games.
A high-powered offense and a strong defense will carry the Spartans to another victory. Solon 35, Mount Vernon 16

Cedar Falls at Iowa City Liberty
Cedar Falls (2-1), Iowa City Liberty (2-1): Iowa City Liberty came up short against a 5A playoff team in Pleasant Valley in Week 3. Now, they’ll play host to Cedar Falls, a team that’s made the playoffs in 19 of the last 20 seasons.
The Lightning have a major edge in the passing department. They’ve totaled 708 passing yards compared to Cedar Falls’ 371 yards in the air. Quarterback Reece Rettig has thrown for 658 yards and eight touchdowns with one interception.
Cedar Falls is a run-heavy team. They’ve totaled 612 yards on the ground for 11 touchdowns. Davarrion Clark will certainly be a part of the defensive gameplan for Liberty. The Cedar Falls senior has controlled the workload, rushing for 478 yards and 10 touchdowns on 70 carries.
The Lightning defense have allowed 35.6 points per game this season. The result will come down to which defense will hold up to create opportunities for their high-powered offenses. There’s no doubt that Liberty has the talent to compete but expect momentum to shift in Cedar Falls’ favor in the fourth quarter. Cedar Falls 40, Iowa City Liberty 37
Clear Creek Amana at Benton
Clear Creek Amana (1-2), Benton (2-1): The last two games have been a tough stretch – in terms of opponent – for the Clippers. They’ve come up short up against Class 3A powerhouses in Solon and Williamsburg. After their latest loss to Williamsburg – the reigning Class 3A state champions – the Clippers will try to get back on track.
The Clippers will have another formidable opponent in Benton, a team that’s coming off a 15-13 loss to Mount Vernon. The Bobcats’ running game will certainly pose a challenge. Brenden Heying, Carson Nolan and Dylan LeFebvere have combined for 639 rushing yards and nine touchdowns in three games this season. The bulk of their carries have belonged to Heying.
The Clipper defense has been outscored 89-34 over the past two games. CCA does have talent on the offensive side to make some noise, but their defense will ultimately cost them. Benton 38, CCA 14
Regina Catholic at Durant
Regina Catholic (3-0), Durant (1-2): The Regals have continued to flourish, coming off a 31-21 win over Mediapolis in Week 3.
Junior quarterback Kyle Tracy has led the charge behind a strong offensive line this season. Regina football has averaged about 369 yards of offense per game this season. Tracy has thrown for 574 yards and six touchdowns with two interceptions, having rushed for 170 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. His top target has been Tate Wallace: a sophomore who’s racked up 244 yards and two touchdowns on 15 catches. Add Savion Miller – who has 255 rushing yards and two touchdowns – to the backfield and the Regals pose a problem for any team.
The Regal defense isn’t one to be overlooked. After going turnover-free in the first two games, they forced four turnovers against Mediapolis in Week 3 that belonged to Porter Shetler, Leren Fernandez, Aaron Honore and Drew Greve.
Regina’s strength on both sides of the ball will be too much for a Durant team that’s allowed 25.5 points per game in two losses this season. Regina Catholic 38, Durant 10
