Indiana’s voting history in U.S. presidential elections

While Indiana is typically a Republican stronghold in presidential elections, Democrats have won the state a handful of times throughout history.

Hoosiers still have time to register to vote in Indiana if they want to cast a ballot in November’s general election, but October’s deadline is fast approaching.

Here’s everything you need to do to ensure you can vote by Election Day.

What are the voter registration deadlines in Indiana?

The last day to register to vote in Indiana is 29 days before an election. That means the deadline for the 2024 general election is Monday, Oct. 7.

If registering to vote in person, it must be at your county’s registration office by the close of the business day (for Marion county, that’s 4:30 p.m., according to Indy.gov). If you register to vote online or by mail, your application must be submitted or postmarked to the election office by 11:59 p.m.

When is the Indiana general election in 2024?

The general election this year happens Tuesday, Nov. 5. The polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Election Day.

Voter requirements in Indiana

You have the right to vote in Indiana if:

You are a citizen of the United States.You are a resident of Indiana with a valid Indiana Driver’s License or Indiana State ID.You have lived in the precinct where you vote for at least 30 days before the election.You are age 18 or older. A 17-year-old can register to vote provided they turn 18 by the date of the election.You are not currently imprisoned after being convicted of a crime. Hoosiers on parole, probation or home detention can still vote.How to register to vote in Indiana online

The state of Indiana has a website where you can register to vote and update or check your voter registration status. Go online to IndianaVoters.in.gov.

How to register to vote in Indiana in person

If you want to register to vote in person, visit your Indiana county’s voter registration office. You can check your voter registration status or find your polling location at any time by calling 1-866-IN-1-VOTE.

How to register to vote in Indiana by mail

You can register to vote by filling out a voter registration form and mailing it to an elections office.

Where to get the forms: Voter registration forms can be downloaded online at the Indiana Secretary of State’s website, or picked up in person at township trustee offices and at branches of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. In Marion County, voter registration forms are also available at public library branches.

Where to mail your form: You can find the mailing address to each county’s election office, as well as the state election division’s mailing address by visiting the state’s voter portal online at IndianaVoters.in.gov.

When to mail them: The state recommends Hoosiers mail their voter registration forms at least one week before the October 7 deadline, which is Monday, Sept. 30.
