EASTON, Pa. – Excitement is brewing at a Northampton County coffee shop, which is in the running for a top national distinction.
Three Birds Coffeehouse, at 226 Bushkill St. in Easton, is among 20 independent coffee shops across the United States nominated in USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice competition for best independent coffee shop.

A panel of experts chose the nominees based on their “cozy atmospheres, friendly baristas, and unique menus,” and now it’s the readers turn to decide the winner.
You can vote online once per day here until voting ends at noon Oct. 7. The 10 winners will be announced on Oct. 16.
“There’s something special about savoring a drink at an independent coffee shop,” the contest description reads.
“They offer an ambience of community, where you feel like more than just a customer. And you can enjoy your coffee without the rush or noise of a chain store — all while supporting a local business.”

ThreeBirds, serving specialty beverages and light fare, opened in 2019 on the ground floor of a 19th century Victorian mansion.
The three-story structure, constructed in 1862, is known as the Bull Mansion after longtime former resident James Bull, a prominent businessman who co-founded Easton’s former Bush & Bull department store.
Lovers of Victorian architecture and design can appreciate several Eastlake and Queen Anne features, including “graceful wooden arches, delicate stained glass windows, and ornate cast metal fixtures,” many of which are original and remain in excellent condition, according to a historical account on the coffee shop’s website.

After purchasing the property in 2018, ThreeBirds co-owners Joseph Langdon and Jennifer Murray implemented a variety of upgrades, including new electrical wiring and HVAC systems, refurbished parquet flooring and fresh wall paint.
Artist co-working space, at the back of the building, is centered around a Hunter-Penrose intaglio press, which can be used for pulling monoprint, woodblock, linotypes, drypoint, and other etching processes.
There also is a drawing/plateworking area, slop sink, cabinet space for supplies and a separate drawing room with flat file.
ThreeBirds, whose name was inspired by the couple’s pet parrots, offers seating at high- and low-top tables, lounge areas with plush furniture and a seasonal outdoor patio.
Customers can enjoy a variety of coffee drinks, including cappuccino, cortado and mocha, along with assorted loose-leaf teas such as white, black, green and oolong.
There are also draft selections such as cold brew nitro coffee, kombucha, iced Earl Gray and sparkling lemonade; and specialty drinks such as a dirty chai, golden latte, matcha latte and espresso and tonic.

House-made syrups include Tahitian vanilla and seasonal flavors such as honey and cinnamon.
ThreeBirds uses coffee from Lancaster’s Passenger Coffee, which seeks out memorable coffees and teas from long term, farmer-focused partnerships around the world.
“We are a dedicated, small but mighty team that believes in the simple pleasure of great coffee and tea,” a message on ThreeBirds’ website reads.
“Our daily menu offers a rotating selection of outstanding single origin coffees from all over the world on drip, pour over, and espresso. Our tea menu features beautiful selections from China, Japan, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and India, from the familiar to the rare.”
The coffee shop also offers food such as assorted pastries from Easton’s The Modern Crumb, granola parfaits and artisan breads such as cranberry walnut, Welsh cheddar and sesame semolina.
“ThreeBirds Coffee House is a 19th-century work of art, and a modern masterpiece in coffee preparation,” reads a description of the coffee shop on the contest’s website.
“Try a coffee from their rotating list of single-origins and blends, opt for a kombucha or nitro cold brew on tap. Nibble on a locally-baked pastry, slather a hunk of bread with olive tapenade and ricotta, and don’t forget to say ‘Hi’ to Beetle and Dorian, the Senegal Parrot and African Grey, when you stop by.”

As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, ThreeBirds – the only Pennsylvania coffee shop nominated in the USA Today contest – is in second place behind Idaho’s Evans Brothers Coffee.
Monomyth Coffee in Texas, Tinker Coffee Co. in Indiana and Onyx Coffee Lab in Arkansas are in third, fourth and fifth places respectively.
“We are so happy to announce that we have been nominated for Best Independent Coffee Shop by USA Today!” an announcement on ThreeBirds’ Facebook page reads.
“There are some truly big and respected names on the nominee list and we are so honored to be included. This is a national contest, and we are the only Pennsylvania shop in the running!! When we started this little project 5 years ago, we really didn’t know how well it would work or be received. The warm and kind reception we’ve gotten from all of you has been overwhelming, and you all just keep giving. It’s hard to overestimate what being a finalist in this contest would mean for us.”
