Oklahoma senior linebacker Danny Stutsman displays a positive side to the name, image and likeness (“NIL”) game.
The 6-foot-4, 243-pound Stutsman, who hails from Windermere, Florida, said late last month that he would share $50,000 of his NIL income with Oklahoma walk-on players, with the money divided up among 18 walk-ons, as reported by On3 college sports business and transfer portal reporter Pete Nakos.
That kindness from Stutsman has been taken a step further. As Nakos noted in a separate article, restaurant chain Walk On’s Sports Bistreaux, which has locations in more than a dozen states, is matching Stutsman’s $50,000 to the Oklahoma walk-ons, according to the Sooners head coach, Brent Venables.
Walk On’s Sports Bistreaux was founded in 2003 by Brandon Landry and Jack Warner, both LSU basketball walk-ons.
Speaking about Stutsman on Oklahoma’s Monday night radio show, Venables said, “What a great gesture on his part. What a great example he is for not only the guys in the locker room but for people [in] society.”
The Sooners, a new member of the powerhouse Southeastern Conference, are currently 3-0 and ranked No. 15 in the most recent Associated Press Top 25 poll. This Saturday, in one of the top games of the Week 4 docket, Oklahoma will host No. 6 Tennessee (3-0) in a battle that could have implications for the SEC race and the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff.
Stutsman does great deeds for his teammates and is also an excellent player. Last season, he was named an AP third-team All-American. When the Sooners beat Tulane at home, 34-19, in Week 3, Stutsman eclipsed 300 total tackles in his collegiate career.
Per Nakos’ article, Stutsman said in August of his Oklahoma teammates, “I feel like I have a really good connection with all of you guys, and I just know how much you put into this program. … With that being said, I want to donate some of my NIL earnings to you guys.”
