South Dakota State Penitentiary, Jameson Annex placed on lockdown

The South Dakota Department of Corrections announced the state’s largest prison has been placed on lockdown.

The South Dakota State Penitentiary and Jameson Annex, an adjacent maximum security facility, entered lockdown status late Sunday night.

“We do not know at this time how long the lockdown will last,” the DOC notice reads. “We will be managing phone service for offenders for the duration of the lockdown. This may include periods of phone service being disabled temporarily. All visits, with the exception of previously approved and scheduled special visits, are cancelled during this time. Attorney visits will not be affected.”

Neither notices regarding the lockdown or visitation changes provided a clear reason for the decisions.

However, the correctional department’s lockdown notice indicated the matter “is related to facility security and operations.” The DOC also noted it would not answer additional questions or inquiries about the lockdown at this time.

The Division of Criminal Investigation within the South Dakota Attorney General’s Office was informed of the lockdown but has not asked to become involved at this point, spokesperson Tony Mangan told the Argus Leader on Monday.

This comes after the department indefinitely suspended general visitation services for inmates on the Jameson Annex’s “D floor” on Friday.
