Oklahoma State Cowboys roll past Tulsa in Week 3 college football

UPDATE: The Oklahoma State Cowboys cruised past the Tulsa Golden Hurricane for a 45-10 win Saturday in Week 3 of the college football season.

TULSA — Coach Mike Gundy and the 14th-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys wrap up nonconference play Saturday with a trip to Tulsa to face the Golden Hurricane.

The Cowboys (2-0) are coming off a comeback win in Week 2, 39-31 in double overtime against Arkansas.

Meanwhile, the Golden Hurricane (1-1) lost to Arkansas State in Week 2.

The Cowboys improve to 3-0 heading into Big 12 play with Utah on tap for next Saturday in Stillwater.

Alan Bowman goes 24-for-31 passing for 396 yards with five touchdowns and an interception.

OSU outgained Tulsa 560 yards to 352.

With Cooper Legas in for Tulsa at quarterback, the Golden Hurricane goes 50 yards in nine plays before settling for a 43-yard field goal from Seth Morgan to finally score.

OSU leads 45-3 midway through the fourth quarter.

With Alan Bowman, Ollie Gordon II and most of the Cowboys’ skill-player starters on the sideline, OSU goes 56 yards on 12 plays to open the fourth quarter and extend the lead.

Backup running back Sesi Vailahi scores on a 1-yard run off a pitch from backup quarterback Garret Rangel.

Rangel went 3-for-6 passing for 36 yards on the drive.

The Cowboys lead 45-0 with 10:05 to go.

Oklahoma State leads 38-0 and will be getting the ball back on a Tulsa punt when the fourth quarter starts. 

The clock expired on the third quarter shortly after Tulsa’s third-down play ended.

OSU backup quarterback Garret Rangel was warming up on the sideline during the TV timeout, but there was no indication as to who would quarterback the next drive.

A holding penalty stalled an OSU drive, leading to a 43-yard field goal by Logan Ward.

He is now 7 of 8 in his first year as starting placekicker.

OSU cornerback Cam Smith came up with his first interception of the season. He returned it to the Tulsa 29, setting up the Cowboys for another scoring opportunity.

The Pokes lead 35-0 with under 4 minutes left in the third quarter.

OSU quarterback Alan Bowman made his most significant mistake of the day with Tulsa’s Jehlen Cannady sneaking underneath an out route for an interception. It was the first turnover of the day for either team.

Bowman floated a pass in between two Tulsa defenders and Stribling cut into open field, running away from all the defenders for yet another long TD pass. 

Bowman now has 389 passing yards on the day.

OSU forced a punt with a sack by Xavier Ross and Jaleel Johnson on a third-down play.

The Cowboys’ drive will start at its own 25 as they try to add to their 28-0 lead with 8:50 left in the third quarter.

Ollie Gordon II’s first rush of the third quarter went for a loss of 2 yards on a fourth-and-1 play. Tulsa takes over at its 42.

The Cowboys have struggled to run the ball all day. Gordon is averaging 2.3 yards per carry.

Though it moved the ball into OSU territory, Tulsa’s offense stalled and punted on its first drive of the third quarter.

The Cowboys’ first second-half possession will start at the 20-yard line after a touchback on the punt.

Behind a sharp first-half performance from quarterback Alan Bowman, OSU has a 28-0 lead at Tulsa.

Bowman has the same number of touchdowns and incompletions — four each — with 274 yards to his name.

With Tulsa loading the box, Bowman has had multiple one-on-one situations with receivers, who have taken advantage of the opportunities. Talyn Shettron leads the group in receiving yards, pulling in two catches for 89 yards, including a 78-yard score.

The run game continues to be a point of concern for the Cowboys, with Ollie Gordon II churning out just 38 yards on 15 first-half carries.

Sneaking out down the middle of the field, OSU tight end Josh Ford was wide open for an 18-yard touchdown catch from Alan Bowman. 

It was the fourth TD pass on the day for Bowman, giving OSU a 28-0 lead with 3:23 left in the half.

The catch was Ford’s first career TD after coming up just short of scoring last week.

Facing fourth-and-20, but feeling it was too far out for a field goal, Tulsa attempted a screen pass to Lloyd Avant, who was tackled 2 yards short of the first down. 

OSu takes over at its 14 with a 21-0 lead and 5:53 left in the second quarter.

Oklahoma State took a 21-0 lead with a 78-yard touchdown pass from Alan Bowman to Talyn Shettron on the third play of the drive. 

It was Shettron’s first touchdown catch of the season.

Bowman is now 15 of 18 for 198 yards and three touchdowns.

Tulsa was forced to punt for the second straight possession after the OSU defense stiffened near midfield.

Alan Bowman lofted a perfect fade throw to De’Zhaun Stribling, who went up and pulled the touchdown pass out of the air for a 14-0 Cowboy lead.

It was Stribling’s second straight catch on the drive and second on the drive, after having an earlier catch wiped out by a holding penalty. 

Bowman is 13 of 16 for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Oklahoma State has moved into Tulsa territory and will face second-and-9 at the Golden Hurricane 29-yard line when the second quarter begins.

OSU has struggled to get the run game going consistently, but Alan Bowman has been sharp through the air, completing 10 of 13 passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. OSU leads 7-0.

After giving up good yardage on the first drive, the OSU defense forced a three-and-out on the next Tulsa possession. After a punt, the Pokes take over at their 35 with a 7-0 lead.

OSU’s Ollie Gordon II got stopped short of a first down, forcing the Cowboys to punt on their second possession. Wes Pahl’s punt was fair caught at the Tulsa 14, a 52-yard punt.

Tulsa found some running room on the opening drive, but missed a field goal to end its first possession of the day. OSU takes over at its 27-yard line with a 7-0 lead.

Tulsa had two rushers combine for 41 yards on five carries, moving easily into OSU territory, but a pair of incomplete passes doomed the drive.

OSU went heavy on its stars to open the game, finishing off the first drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Brennan Presley for a 7-0 lead.

Presley had five total touches on the drive, including a 22-yard rush on a reverse. Ollie Gordon II had seven carries for 23 yards. QB Alan Bowman was 6 of 8 for 30 yards on the drive.

Oklahoma State will be without starting right tackle Jake Springfield because of an undisclosed injury, OSU radio voice Dave Hunziker reported.

Hunziker speculated that the injury could linger beyond Saturday, but offered no specifics.

OSU has used two players at left tackle, with Dalton Cooper and Isaia Glass each making one start.

It seems likely that one of them will move to the right side in Springfield’s spot.

Other than that, linebackers Collin Oliver and Justin Wright both remain out as expected.
