Sep. 16—Welcome to the weekly good news roundup, bringing you some of the great “good news” from around New Mexico.

USA Hockey comes to town

Hockey fans in Albuquerque were treated to a show over the weekend, as the New Mexico Ice Wolves and the USA Hockey National Team Development Program Under-17 team played two exhibition games at the Outpost Ice Arenas. This is the second time in three years, the familiar red, white and blue jerseys of a USA Hockey program graced the ice in Albuquerque. In 2021, the Ice Wolves welcomed the USA women’s team for two exhibition games ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, where Team USA won silver.

The Ice Wolves cruised to a 5-2 victory in game on on Friday. Team USA evened the weekend series the following might, scoring the deciding goal in overtime for a 3-2 win. Both teams’ focus now shifts to the regular season. Team USA, which plays in the United State Hockey League, will begin play against the Fargo Force on Sept. 27-28. Meanwhile, the Ice Wolves open the North American Hockey League season at home in a three-game set against their division rival Corpus Christi Ice Rays on Sept. 20-22.

Lowrider Bike Program returns

The city of Albuquerque’s Lowrider Bike Program is returning for its third year, and this year’s class promises to feature more trade skills training and stronger mentorship connections between the youth and lowrider community. Led by Rob Vanderslice of the Vanderslice Kustom Shop, the educational program for middle and high school students is offered through the city’s Youth and Family Service Department. Over the course of the program, students learn a variety of trade skills like painting, fabrication, welding, leatherwork and upholstering.

“This program is just the vessel for something bigger,” Vanderslice said in a press release. “I am bless to be able to pass on what I know to the next generation and really set them up for life.”

The program has more than doubled in size — to 60 from roughly 25 students last year. There are still a few spots available for students and interested mentors. Visit www.cabq.gov/lowrider-bike for more information.
