Cody Fajardo, Deonte Burton, Atoya Burleson headline Nevada’s 2024 Hall of Fame class

The Nevada athletic department announced its seven-member 2024 Hall of Fame class that will be inducted next month.

The class features Deonte Burton (men’s basketball, 2010-14), Cody Fajardo (football, 2011-14), Fred Harvey (rifle head coach, 1995-2019), En-tien (Grace) Huang (diving, 2010-14), Katie Lyons (skiing, 2007-10), Atoya Shaw Burleson (track and field, 1995-2000), and Braden Shipley (baseball, 2011-13).

The class will be inducted during Homecoming Weekend and honored at the Wolf Pack’s homecoming game Oct. 18 against Fresno State. Additionally, Lauralyn Sandoval, a Wolf Pack tennis alum and the wife of UNR president Brian Sandoval, will be honored as the recipient of the 2024 Silver & Blue Service Award.

Since its inception in 1973, the Nevada athletics Hall of Fame has inducted 233 individuals and five teams. Here are bios on this year’s honorees.

Deonte Burton—Men’s Basketball (2010-14)

Started all 130 games in his four seasons and is just the second player in school history to score over 2,000 points … Finished his career ranked second in Nevada history with 2,102 points … Senior honors include; first-team All-MW, first-team NABC District 17, first-team USBWA District VIII, J.E. ‘Doc’ Martie Award (Nevada’s senior male Athlete of the Year), team MVP, Nevada Rock Award recipient, Nov. 17, Jan. 13 and Mar. 10 MW Player of the Week, Preseason All-MW media selection, 21st best guard by CBSSports.com, 71st best player in college hoops by CBSSports.com, Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitation All-Tournament team … One of 29 players collegiate basketball players that received an invitation from USA Basketball to compete for a spot on the roster for the 2013 USA Basketball Men’s World University Games but did not earn a spot on the 12-man roster … Ended his career ranked in the top five in nine categories at Nevada … During his career led the Pack in scoring 66 times, scored over 20 points 41 times which includes three games of 30 or more points … In 130 games had 103 double figure scoring contests.

Cody Fajardo—Football (2011-14)

Was named the WAC Freshman of the Year in 2011 … named second-team All-WAC in 2012 and honorable-mention in 2014 … four-year starter and two-time team captain… became just the second player in FBS history to reach 9,000 yards passing and 3,000 yards rushing in a career, joining Nevada alumni Colin Kaepernick… broke the program record for career completions while improving to second in career total offense … broke the MW record for most 100-yard rushing games by a QB invited to play in the 90th annual East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 17 .., one of 10 finalists for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award … completed 225-of-376 passes for 2,374 yards and 18 touchdown passes as a senior… at the end of the regular season, ranks third amongst active FBS players in career total offense with 12,968 yards… ranked third in the MW in total offense per game (280.9)… had a breakout sophomore season, running for 1,121 yards and 12 touchdowns and throwing for 2,786 yards and 20 scores… total offense of 3,907 yards marked the fourth-best single-season total in school history … Became just the second quarterback in school history to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in rushing … His 246 completions ranked sixth-best in school history… was 10th in the nation and led the Mountain West in total offense at 325.58 yards per game… took over the starting job in week five and led the Wolf Pack to five straight wins in October and November as a redshirt freshman… completed more than 68 percent of his passes for 1,707 yards and six touchdowns with five interceptions… was third on the team in rushing with 694 yards and led the team with 11 rushing touchdown … finished second in the WAC in touchdowns and passing efficiency, four in total offense, seventh in rushing went undrafted but spent a brief time on the Oakland Raiders’ practice squad has gone onto a successful career in the Canadian Football League with the Toronto Argonauts (2015-17), the BC Lions (2018), the Saskatchewan Roughriders (2019-22) and the Montreal Alouettes (2023-present) won Grey Cup Championship with Argonauts in 2017 and the Alouettes in 2023 was the Grey Cup Most Valuable Player in 2023 and led the league in completion percentage earned All-Star honors and led the league in passing yards in 2019.

Fred Harvey—Rifle (Head Coach, 1995-2019)

Led the Nevada rifle team for 24 seasons from 1995 to 2019 when the University decided to discontinue the program… led the team in its entire NCAA era… his team qualified for the NCAA Rifle Championships eight times during his tenure (2002-2006, 2008, 2009, 2012)… finished as the NCAA runner-up in 2004 … was named the College Rifle Coaches Association Coach of the Year in 2003 when his team finished fourth at the NCAA Championships… also saw nine individuals qualify for the NCAA Championships… helped Nevada host the 2005 NCAA Championship at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs… coached Hall of Famer Ryan Tanoue to the 2002 NCAA individual air rifle championship… coached 11 student-athletes to 26 All-America certificates in his 24-year tenure, including four-time All-Americans Mitchell Van Patten and Ryan Tanoue… two of his student-athletes have been inducted in the Nevada Athletics Hall of Fame (Tanoue and Meghann Morrill)… consistently donated considerable personal funds to his program and saw his program ranked among the top academic performers in the athletics department.

En-tien (Grace) Huang—Diving (2010-14)

Named the Mountain West Diver of the Year in 2014 and the Western Conference Athletic Diver of the Year in 2012… was Nevada’s first conference diver of the year in 10 years when she won the award in 2012… earned honorable-mention All-America honors with a 16th place finish in the 3-meter springboard at the 2014 NCAA Championships… just missed the award in the national platform event that year, finishing 17th… won Mountain West individual titles in the 1-meter springboard and platform events at the 2014 Mountain West Championships and was the conference runner-up in the 3-meter competition… earned All-Mountain West honors in all three diving disciplines in 2013 and 2014 (1-meter, 3-meter and platform) won the 3-meter Mountain West title in 2013 and was third in the platform… was Nevada’s highest scoring diver in all of the Wolf Pack’s event in 2011-12… Voted to the Mountain West 25th Season Swimming & Diving Team in 2024.

Katie Lyons—Skiing (2007-10)

Earned NCAA All-America honors in 2008 after finishing seventh in the women’s slalom at the NCAA Championships… three-time NCAA qualifier… named the RMISA Skier of the Week for Feb. 25-29, 2008 after winning the women’s slalom at a race just prior to the NCAA Regional… finished third in the women’s giant slalom and fourth in the women’s slalom at the 2008 NCAA West Regional… was awarded a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in 2010… graduated summa cum laude with a degree in biology in May of 2009 and pursued a second degree in nutrition science in 2010… was one of the top 30 honorees and one of 10 representing NCAA Division I for the 2010 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, which honors female student-athletes who have distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, community service and leadership… Reno native who excelled on the slopes despite being diagnosed with scoliosis and having back surgery when she was 15… was also an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District selection… was active in Nevada’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, joining as a team representative at first and then moving through the leadership ranks, serving as treasurer, vice president and then president in 2009-10… active in community service projects while a part of SAAC, including the Wolf Pack’s adopt-a-soldier project, a dance for student-athletes, more interactive Champs/Life Skills events and a teacher recognition program… also continued to work with her back surgeon to help other scoliosis patients deal with the condition, volunteering at clinics and with doctors… was accepted into the University of Nevada School of Medicine… served as a class officer while in medical school.

Braden Shipley—Baseball (2011-13)

Earned Mountain West Pitcher of the Year honors in 2013 and WAC Pitcher of the Year honors in 2012… first-team all-conference the last two seasons in two different conferences … posted a 17-7 career record that is the ninth best winning percentage (.708) in school history … ranks sixth in school history with 203 career strikeouts posted a 7-3 record with a 2.77 ERA in 2013… led the team in wins and ERA that year struck out 102 which ranks as the seventh best season in school history and was second in the MW switched to the mound in 2012 after playing shortstop for the Wolf Pack in 2011 went 9-4 with a WACbest 2.20 ERA in 2012 led the WACin ERA(2.20), opponent batting average (.212) and wins (9) and was second in the conference in innings pitched (98.1) and third in strikeouts (88) that year selected as the 15th overall pick of the 2013 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks … highest selected athlete in the history of Nevada athletics … a pair of Wolf Pack basketball players Kirk Snyder (2005) and Luke Babbitt (2011) were picked 16th in the first round made his Major League debut with the Diamondbacks and made 13 appearances his rookie season has played several more seasons in the Minor Leagues and in the Mexican League … Voted to the Mountain West 25th Season Baseball Team in 2024.

Atoya Shaw Burleson—Women’s Track & Field (1995-2000)

Won gold in the 100 hurdles in the 2000 Big West outdoor championship with the second-fastest time in school history while helping Nevada win its first women’s track and field conference championship that season… left Nevada as the owner of three school records, including the 400-meter hurdles along with being a part of record-setting 4×100 and 4×400 relay (still ninth) teams… also posted top-five marks in school history in the 55 hurdles (second and now fifth), 100 hurdles (still 10th) and 100 meters… is part of a Wolf Pack family, including her husband, Nate, who is a member of the Hall of Fame, and two sons who currently play football… her brother, Joey Shaw, and brother in law, Lyndale Burleson, also played for the Wolf Pack basketball team.

2024 Silver & Blue Service Award

Lauralyn Sandoval

With a 30-year plus career as an executive, innovator and entrepreneur in the gaming industry, Lauralyn serves as the Vice President of New Markets at Aristocrat Technologies. She is also an investor and advisor to Gaming Analytics, an AI revenue data analysis company, and a member of the board of IC360, a sport’s integrity company…. A proud advocate and frequent public speaker on opportunities for women in the workforce. She served as a board member of Global Gaming Women, co-chair for the Great Women of Gaming Awards, and has been named an honorary board member of the Women’s Research Institute of Nevada. In her role as First Lady of the State of Nevada, she created “Level Up,” an educational program to help women “Level Up” in community-based operations, for-profit business, education, law enforcement, and civil service opportunities…. As the sibling of a brother and sister with severe developmental disabilities, Lauralyn is passionate and determined to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities. She has served on Opportunity Village’s Foundation Board and the Nevada Governor’s Council on Developmental Disabilities…. Lauralyn’s work in the community also included serving as a mentor at Core Academy, a program for at-risk youth to reach their academic and life potential, as well as being a co-founder of Cancer Research Racquet, which supports the American Cancer Society. She currently sits on the board of the Davidson Academy…. Lauralyn’s support of Wolf Pack Athletics was highlighted in April 2024 when she was honored with the Lauralyn McCarthy Sandoval ’92 Women’s Tennis Scholarship, supporting one female tennis student-athlete annually…. During her time as a student at the University of Nevada, she served as ASUN Arts Chair, Student Ambassador, SAGEN’s service organization board member, and Pi Beta Phi President. She was named to the Presidential Honor Roll and Top Ten Senior Women during her tenure. She also received the Pi Beta Phi National Change Leadership Award.
