The new contract Sherrone Moore and Michigan agreed to last week will reportedly protect him from being fired for his involvement in the sign-stealing scandal that came to light last season.
Per USA Today’s Steve Berkowitz and Tony Garcia, Michigan “appears to have agreed not to fire Moore for cause based on its current knowledge of Moore’s involvement in the alleged sign-stealing scandal centering on former football staff member Connor Stalions.”
The NCAA issued Michigan and Moore a notice of allegations last month that stated Moore could face a show-cause penalty and a possible suspension for his involvement in the scandal, per ESPN’s Dan Murphy and Pete Thamel.
The draft states that Moore allegedly deleted a thread of 52 messages with Stalions in October of last year on the same day the sign-stealing scandal came to light. The draft also said that Moore is accused of committing a Level 2 violation.
On top of the allegations of his involvement with the sign-stealing scandal, Moore is also considered to be a potential “repeat violator” by the NCAA. In August 2023, Moore “negotiated a resolution to claims that he contacted recruits during a COVID-19 recruiting dead period.”
While he cannot be fired for cause based on his current known involvement in the sign-stealing scandal, he can be suspended without pay or fired for cause “if the University determines that the Head Coach has been involved in a violation of the Governing Rules, whether prior to or after the Effective Date of this Agreement,” according to the contract.
Moore, who has been on Michigan’s staff since 2018, agreed to be the Wolverines head coach in January after Jim Harbaugh departed for the Los Angeles Chargers. Though the contract lists Jan. 27, 2024, as the start date, it was not signed by Moore and athletics director Warde Manuel until this month.
The contract, which expires in 2029, will give Moore $6 million in basic compensation this season.
Moore and the Wolverines are off to a 2-1 start, losing to Texas in between wins against Fresno State and Arkansas State. Michigan has its first Big Ten test this week when it faces off against USC.
