State Food Waste Bans Don’t Work, Except in Massachusetts: CityLab Daily

Across the US, businesses waste 80 billion pounds of food each year. While some states have implemented commercial food waste bans, only Massachusetts has seen a meaningful reduction in total landfilled and incinerated waste, according to a new study. Looking at data through the end of 2018, the researchers concluded that the vast majority of these programs had been ineffective.

The study — the first to evaluate such programs — suggests that it’s “not enough to pass a food waste ban,” researchers told Zahra Hirji.
