Pramana, a Massachusetts firm that scans medical slides, is building a new center in Rochester

Sep. 16—ROCHESTER — Pramana , a Massachusetts-based digital pathology laboratory that works with Mayo Clinic, is building out its new North American distribution and manufacturing center in Rochester.

Construction is underway for a 5,000-square-foot space in Building 103 on the Rochester Technology Campus , formerly known as the IBM campus . Building permits estimate the value of the project at more than $260,000.

“It (the Rochester center) will serve as our key location for a variety of functions and roles, including trainers, engineers, factory and warehouse workers, and application engineers. Additionally, we plan to designate space to establish a Center of Excellence for our training initiatives, further enhancing our capabilities and resources,” wrote Pramana Vice President of Operations Jason Ross. “This expansion aligns with Pramana’s mission to advance innovation and excellence through use of technology such as AI and machine learning, focused on autonomous operations, reinforcing our commitment to leading the way in technological development and digital pathology.”

Pramana hopes to have construction of the Rochester center completed in November. The company did not share how many people work there, though Ross said the number of Rochester employees could grow quickly.

“Our business is growing rapidly, and we plan to expand both our space and team with new job opportunities at this location. Although we’re starting small, there is significant potential for growth as we continue to scale,” he wrote. “This facility will enhance our ability to foster innovation for pathologists, labs, R&D, and beyond.”

In 2021, Pramana introduced its service to digitize pathology slides for medical institutions using robotic automation and artificial intelligence software. Pramana’s first commercial agreement was a multi-year deal with Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic has millions of patient samples on glass slides going back to 1891.

The new Rochester site is not directly connected to Pramana’s Mayo Clinic collaboration.

“While this project isn’t directly tied to our work with Mayo Clinic’s Tissue Registry , the new location was chosen for its proximity to one of our key partners and its status as a new thriving tech hub. These factors will help us collaborate more effectively on various initiatives and strengthen our partnerships,” wrote Ross.

Pramana is not the only biotech firm crafting a new space in Building 103 on the Rochester Technology Campus.

Rion, a Rochester regenerative start-up, is creating its own 10,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in the same building. The goal is to have the facility up and running by the end of 2024 or early in 2025.

Rion was founded in 2017 by Mayo Clinic Drs. Andre Terzic and Atta Behfar with Scott Rosenow.
