Where do voter registrations in Maryland stand?

When Vice President Kamala Harris took the to the stage on the final night of last month’s Democratic National Convention, the eyes of the world (and of her great-niece) were watching.

A mentee, Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, the Democratic candidate for United States Senate in Maryland, had taken the stage to speak in Chicago a couple days prior.

But after all the convention speeches and a momentous month in presidential history the previous month (when the current Oval Office occupant announced he would not seek reelection), where did voter registrations in the state of Maryland stand at the end of the month of August, just two full months before Americans cast their ballots for the next President of the United States?

New voter registrations in Maryland were down in August as compared to July, with only 35,448 people registering across the state, according to an August report from the Maryland State Board of Elections. This total was about 2,000 new registrations less than the total new registrations of the previous month.

Of the approximately new 35,500 registrations statewide, a little more than 17,300 registered as Democrats, 5,986 registered as Republicans, and 10,935 registered as unaffiliated in August. These were all drop-offs from the new registration totals in the state in July.

At the end of August, in Washington County, for example, there were 44,300 registered Republicans (a slight increase from the total the month prior). The county had 30,430 registered Democrats (also a slight rise from the total the month prior), and 23,880 registered unaffiliated voters (again, a slight increase from the total the month prior).

In the state in total, 4,204,440 individuals were registered to vote at the end of August, raising the total registrations back above four million after a drop-off the month before. This means that while monthly registrations were down from the previous 31 days’ total, the month that the Democratic National Convention took place saw a net increase in total registrations in Maryland.

Statewide, there were 1,002,956 registered Republicans in August, according to the state board’s website, an increase from how many were registered with the party in July, the month of the Republican National Convention.

In August, there were 2,207,340 Democrats in Maryland registered, also an increase from the previous month. With less than 70 days until the polls close on Election Day Nov. 5, the Democratic registration number in Maryland was still more than twice the number of registered Republicans.

Close to a million people in Maryland (916,558 to be exact) were registered as unaffiliated in August, according to the state board’s website, again an increase from the previous month total.

What effect (if any) the Sept. 10 presidential debate or the scheduled Oct. 10 U.S. senatorial debate between former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, the Republican candidate, and Alsobrooks, the Democratic candidate, has on voter registration in Maryland is like the outcome of the 2024 election: yet to be seen.
