Maryland Coastal Bay Programs working on a comprehensive plan for the next 10 years for the bay watershed

CHESAPEAKE BAY – The Maryland Coastal Bays Program is seeking public input for its new comprehensive conservation plan. The watershed is a very important aspect of Delmarva, residents and tourists can enjoy fishing, hunting, and boating.

Watershed Coordinator for MCBP, Steve Farr, said this plan is worked to reach their mission. “As part of being governed by what we call a comprehensive management plan and that is a 10-year strategic plan for us and our partners to undertake over the next 10 years to achieve our mission.”

Farr said this new plan is detailed and thorough. “Everything from stormwater to septic’s, to climate change and the effects of climate change making an impact on the watershed.”

The project is still being revised, but it needs to be able to able to last the 10-year timeline, “The magnitude of those actions but also the breath of those actions we try to construct the plan in a way that is comprehensive and thorough but also in a way that can change the needs and conditions over time.”

The community can voice their opinions with the community meetings lined up, on Wednesday, September 18th at the Worcester County Recreation Center from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. As well as on Thursday, September 26th, Holiday Inn Conference Center in Ocean City from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Farr said the community is the lifeline of the project. “We have composed a series of goals and actions, probably about 150 actions all told, and we want to make sure those actions reflect the interests of the general public, it is always good we are keeping up with the pulse of the community because the watershed is important not only for the environment but the community it depends on.”

The comprehensive plan will undergo revisions until the beginning of the next calendar year, where they will have a draft outlined, but not finalized.
