Saturday’s game was probably the best performance of the season for OU’s offensive line. The fact that it only gains a C grade shows you how bad its been so far.
Logan Howland got the start at left tackle, but was quickly taken out of the lineup, as left guard Jacob Sexton kicked outside and Heath Ozaeta came off the bench to move into Sexton’s spot. The left side of the line had plenty of issues, especially in the second half, but Arnold’s mobility and guts were enough to get the job done.
Joshua Bates got his second straight start at center, as OU awaits the return from injury of starter Branson Hickman. He had some poor moments again, but was better this week than the last.
Right guard Febechi Nwaiwu continues to be a consistent presence up front for the Sooners. Next to him, right tackle Michael Tarquin didn’t have a great afternoon, lining up incorrectly twice in the second half. Backup right tackle Spencer Brown was not the answer again in his limited snaps. Oklahoma needs to have Jake Taylor back as soon as he’s ready.
The offensive line played well early, as OU built the 21-0 lead. However, they were strikingly bad as Tulane was getting back into the game. Arnold was under pressure for the entire second half, and the pick-six was a direct result of a missed blitz pickup.
However, there weren’t anymore serious injuries for a banged-up unit, so hopefully OU can get a couple of starters back for next week. They’ll need all the help they can get.
