Just two plays into the game, a 42-yard Southern Miss football trick play provided early hope that the Golden Eagles could upset visiting USF on Saturday. The 14 unanswered points that followed were encouraging as well.
It disappeared minutes later as USF (1-2) rattled off three straight scores against Southern Miss (1-2) for a comfortable 49-24 win at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg.
“We just didn’t play a complete game for four quarters,” Southern Miss coach Will Hall said. “We came out hot with a great start and two great offensive drives, and got a great fourth down stop defensively.”
Three quarterbacks — Tate Rodemaker, Ethan Crawford and John White — saw action for the Golden Eagles.
“Tate’s ankle was banged up,” said Hall. “Two drives before that, he turned his ankle. That next drive, we had a wide-open corner route. We were backed up on about the 9-yard line around a sprint out pass. He had a wide-open corner out, and he missed it, and he just didn’t look like himself. He didn’t have good stability and a foundation right there. And so we felt like we needed to go with Ethan, and so that’s what we did.”
Crawford provided a spark upon entering late in the second quarter, making big plays through the air and on the ground. That spark fizzled quickly after the halftime break as the visitors outscored Southern Miss 21-3 in the second half.
Crawford, a sophomore, finished 6-of-13 passing for 183 yards. He had 19 rushing yards, one touchdown and an interception. Rodemaker was an efficient 10-of-15 passing for 120 yards and two scores in his nearly two quarters of work.
Southern Miss was unable to slow quarterback Byrum Brown and the USF offense which put up 562 yards of total offense.
“I just feel like everybody just needs to do their job,” said Southern Miss linebacker Tre Pinkney. “I feel like we would be all right down the stretch, but we end up giving over 300 rushing yards, so that was a big problem. You take those explosive plays, I don’t think they have as much success as they did throughout the night, but if everybody does their ‘1-11’, we’ll be just fine.”
The Golden Eagles produced 487 yards themselves but also lost two fumbles which translated into 14 points for the Bulls.
“I am disappointed that we had a chance to win a big game right here at home versus a really good football team, but that’s not good enough,” said Hall. “It’s not why we came here. We came here to build this program into a place that competes for conference championships, which I think this team has a chance to do.”
