Louisiana officials react to assassination attempt on Donald Trump

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is safe following gunshots near his golf course in Florida, his campaign and U.S. Secret Service announced on Sunday. The incident appears to be the second assassination in two month attempt against the former president’s life and a suspect is in custody.

The man in custody is Ryan Wesley Routh, according to three media outlets, citing multiple unidentified law enforcement sources who said Routh pointed a rifle with a scope into Trump’s Mar-a-Lago golf club.

Louisiana officials have taken to social media to react to the incident.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise

Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana condemned the violence. “I can’t believe I’m having to say this once again this election cycle: there is absolutely no place for violence in politics,” Scalise wrote on X.

U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy

Republican Louisiana U.S. Sen. Bill Cassidy praised the Secret Service and law enforcement.

“With news reports about the threat to President Trump’s life, we can appreciate the bravery of Secret Service agents and other law enforcement personnel and pray for the safety of President Trump and all Americans,” Cassidy posted on X.
