BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Good morning and happy Sunday! We continue to watch the remnants of Francine spin to our west. We have been dealing with another batch of rain that continues from northwest Alabama all the way down to southeast Alabama. A flood watch continues until 7 a.m. CDT across most of Central Alabama. First Alert AccuTrack Satellite and Radar is showing us cloudy with most of the rain along and west of I-65. It looks like most of the rain today will occur this morning as it slowly pushes off to the west. Prepare for wet roads and a low-end threat for flooding through the mid-morning hours. I definitely recommend grabbing the rain gear if you plan to be outside before noon. Temperatures are starting out in the upper 60s and lower 70s. The good news about today’s forecast is that our chance to see rain could become more isolated or widely scattered around noon. I don’t expect widespread showers this afternoon that can result in flooding. Instead, we will likely see scattered showers develop this afternoon. We will likely remain mostly cloudy today with highs in the upper 70s. Winds will end up a little breezy from the east at 10-15 mph. If you have any evening plans, isolated showers can’t be ruled out. Temperatures will likely cool into the lower 70s by 7 p.m. CDT with a partly to mostly cloudy sky.
The next 24 hours(wbrcnews)
Isolated shower possible Monday: We will likely wake up tomorrow morning with a partly to mostly cloudy sky with temperatures in the mid to upper 60s. Rain chances are lower tomorrow at 30%. I think most of us will end up mostly dry with a few breaks in the cloud cover giving us some much-needed sunshine at times. Temperatures tomorrow afternoon will likely warm into the low to mid 80s. Winds are forecast to come from the east-northeast at 5-10 mph.
First Alert Rain Coverage(wbrcnews)
Dry conditions by Midweek: The good news about the upcoming week is that we finally get to dry out! We should see increasing sunshine Tuesday into Wednesday as slightly drier air moves into the area. Tuesday is shaping up to be partly cloudy with highs in the mid 80s. A stray shower will be possible to the south, but the majority of us will remain dry. We should see a mostly sunny sky Wednesday through Friday with afternoon highs close to average for the middle of September. Most of us will end up with highs in the mid to upper 80s with overnight lows in the low to mid 60s. Isolated rain chances could return by next weekend, but it appears that most of us will remain dry after tomorrow. I know the recent wind and rain has created a mess in the yard. The weather will cooperate to allow you to knock out some yardwork this week.
Tropical update(wbrcnews)
Tropical Update: We are watching two systems out in the Atlantic. One area of low pressure has a 50% chance to develop into a tropical depression or storm in the next 48 hours. It is located off the coast of South Carolina. It is currently producing an increasing rip current threat off the South Carolina and North Carolinas coasts. It will likely move into the Carolinas early this week producing rain and gusty winds. It will likely remain to our northeast, so I doubt it’ll have any impact on our weather across Central Alabama. The next name up on the 2024 Atlantic Hurricane list is “Helene”.
Tropical Storm Gordon(wbrcnews)
Tropical Storm Gordon is struggling as it spins in the open waters of the Central Atlantic Ocean. As of the 4 a.m. CDT advisory, winds are down at 40 mph as it moves to the west-southwest at 10 mph. Gordon is dealing with some wind shear which is disrupting it from intensifying. It will likely remain weak and get downgraded into a tropical depression later today. Gordon is forecast to remain weak in the Central Atlantic and should not impact the United States. The rest of the Atlantic remains quiet. The Atlantic hurricane season officially ends on November 30.
