Is a tropical storm headed to Massachusetts? What to know about it.

Hurricane season is upon us, one that is predicted to be relatively busy.

But the forecast keeps changing, in terms of how many hurricanes could form, and how many could affect New England.

In August, AccuWeather meteorologists said this month would be a “supercharged September” in terms of hurricanes, but the first part of the month has been pretty quiet.

There has been a “long lull that has been experienced in recent weeks where there have been no named storms during what is typically a very active time of the hurricane season,” AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jon Porter said in a press release last week.

But there is one tropical storm in the Atlantic Basin right now that could affect the East Coast of the U.S. within the next few days.

Will it affect Massachusetts, or the rest of New England? Here’s what to know.

Could a hurricane affect Massachusetts in the next week?

AccuWeather meteorologists are saying that a tropical storm off Cuba this week called Tropical Storm Gordon could affect the East Coast in the next few days, but probably not New England.

“High pressure is likely to remain strong enough to keep tropical downpours away from New England next week,” AccuWeather stated.

The National Hurricane Center stated this week that “There are no active storms in the North Atlantic, Caribbean Sea, or Gulf of Mexico right now. However, there are several tropical disturbances in the Atlantic that could develop in the next few days.”

Earlier this week, meteorologist Bryce Williams of the National Weather Service in Norton, Massachusetts gave USA Today Network a similar prediction, noting there there are no hurricane threats at the moment.

“We are not expecting impacts from anything in the foreseeable future,” Williams said Tuesday, adding that the “foreseeable future” means within the next eight days or so.

“Beyond that, we will have to see,” Williams said.

How has the forecast for the hurricane season changed?

Initially, AccuWeather meteorologists were predicting 20-25 hurricanes in total for the 2024 season. But in its latest update, AccuWeather changed the overall forecast to 20-23 hurricanes, two less than originally predicted.

How many hurricanes are typical for this time of year?

The record number of named storms in the Atlantic basin from Sept. 1 through the end of the season is 16, according to AccuWeather. Meteorologists there say there have been seasons in the past where eight named storms formed in the month of October, and three named storms formed in November.

For the same time period of Aug. 27 to Sept. 30, the historical average is six named storms, according to AccuWeather.

How long does hurricane season last?

The season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30 in Massachusetts and the rest of New England.
